Their goal is to prevent Trump, not get Hillary in. That's why they're promoting voting for Kasich as an alternative to Trump. They e been clear about this the little I've read.

they've been very open from the beginning that their goal is to stop Trump, even if that means stopping Hillary too.

Their goal is to stop Trump, and they believe they can do that if Republicans in the House have three choices instead of two. The only way that can happen is if they can turn enough Trump electoral votes to a third person, and they believe that Republican electors are more likely to do that if some Democratic electors do it as well.

the president (one state, one vote) from the top 3 presidential EV recipients and the Senate picks the VP (one senator, one vote) from the top two VP EV recipients.

Any electoral vote they choose. It just takes a joint objection and both the House and Senate voting to sustain the objection.
