(12,448 posts)It's not an easy read--the subject matter itself is very complicated. But this seems to be very very bad indeed.
The trouble is, it's unlikely most Americans will understand it, and its implications. If true (and the computer scientists involved are highly respected), this alone would disqualify Trump for the presidency or ANY office in government, elected or not. As for the media, if it's not a quick sound bite they'll ignore it. (Besides, most won't understand it.)
The computer scientists were NOT looking for anything like this; they didn't have that agenda. But they found it.

(10,749 posts)Trump is s Russian agent. Not s long term, deep cover thing, but at this point I would put money on the likelihood that trumps run is reducing his debt to Russian banks/oligarchs and rest if he wins he starts raking in some real dough.
This latest bit is icing on the cake. No question.

(2,056 posts)His foundation reeks of a money laundering operation. US banks have not been willing to lend Trump money for a long time because he doesn't pay his bills and files bankruptcy. It's not too far of a stretch to wonder if he gets his funding from Russian mafia loan sharks and he is in the pocket of Putin.
Stealth/hidden private Russian servers are expensive and are generally not used for anything wholesome. I think the next few days will be very interesting.

(5,666 posts)was talking about, something explosive between drumpf and russia?
The researchers quickly dismissed their initial fear that the logs represented a malware attack. The communication wasnt the work of bots. The irregular pattern of server lookups actually resembled the pattern of human conversationconversations that began during office hours in New York and continued during office hours in Moscow. It dawned on the researchers that this wasnt an attack, but a sustained relationship between a server registered to the Trump Organization and two servers registered to an entity called Alfa Bank.

The gop insists that there is massive voter fraud. The story of insane proportions is more easily believed because most people are too honest to tell whoopers. But the sociopaths know that the whoopers will easily sell, so they declare ridiculous conspiracies against the Democrats, like us engaging in voter fraud.
The most reasonable scenario is that Comey is not an agent for the KGB, FSB, or whatever. But declaring him one is more believable because it's a bigger story, a new Big Lie to counter the shit they've been throwing like gibbons for decades.

(5,666 posts)Tea Leaves and his colleagues plotted the data from the logs on a timeline. What it illustrated was suggestive: The conversation between the Trump and Alfa servers appeared to follow the contours of political happenings in the United States. At election-related moments, the traffic peaked, according to Camp. There were considerably more DNS lookups, for instance, during the two conventions.
The Times hadnt yet been in touch with the Trump campaignLichtblau spoke with the campaign a week laterbut shortly after it reached out to Alfa, the Trump domain name in question seemed to suddenly stop working. When the scientists looked up the host, the DNS server returned a fail message, evidence that it no longer functioned.

(109,657 posts)It involves a Trump advisor who helped Trump write a foreign policy speech, and has earned hundreds of thousands for his work promoting a Russian pipeline -- and has connections to Alfa bank.
http://www.politico.com/story/2016/10/donald-trump-campaign-lobbyist-russian-pipeline-229264
A Republican lobbyist was earning hundreds of thousands of dollars to promote one of Vladimir Putins top geopolitical priorities at the same time he was helping to shape Donald Trumps first major foreign policy speech.
In the first two quarters of 2016, the firm of former Reagan administration official Richard Burt received $365,000 for work he and a colleague did to lobby for a proposed natural-gas pipeline owned by a firm controlled by the Russian government, according to congressional lobbying disclosures reviewed by POLITICO. The pipeline, opposed by the Polish government and the Obama administration, would complement the original Nord Stream, allowing more Russian gas to reach central and western European markets while bypassing Ukraine and Belarus, extending Putins leverage over Europe.
SNIP
This spring, Burt helped shape Trumps first major foreign policy address, according to Burt and other sources. Burt recommended that Trump take a more realist, less interventionist approach to world affairs, as first reported by Reuters. Trumps April 27 speech sounded those themes and called for greater cooperation with Russia.
SNIP
Burts connections to Russia go back many decades. In 1989, former President George H.W. Bush appointed Burt to negotiate the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with the USSR, which was concluded in 1991. In recent years, the 69-year-old Burt said he has advised Russias Alfa Bank, and he continues to work with the banks co-founder, Mikhail Fridman. Burt has also registered for recent lobbying work on behalf of the Ukrainian construction firm TMM, the Polish government-owned airline LOT and the Capital Bank of Jordan.

(2,056 posts)Vladimir Putins elder daughter, Maria, has kept out of the spotlight even more than her sister. Reuters was unable to find any recent, confirmed photographs of Maria.
Born on Apr. 28, 1985, Maria studied biology at St. Petersburg University and medicine at Moscow State University.
According to Russian and Western media reports, she married a Dutch businessman called Jorrit Joost Faassen. Some reports claimed she lived in the Netherlands for a while, but this could not be confirmed.
Earlier this year, Putin said both his daughters were living in Moscow, but gave no further details.
Maria now uses the surname Faassen, and under that name she is pursuing a biomedical career specialising in the endocrine system, which controls the bodys hormones, according to academic listings and publications.
On the website of Istina, a directory of scholars and their work at Moscow State University, she is listed as co-author of five studies published in the past two years, with titles including The status of blood antioxidant system in patients with active acromegaly.
She is also the co-author of a book about Idiopathic stunting in children, published earlier this year by Lambert Academic Publishing.
Maria is a PhD candidate at the Endocrinology Research Centre in Moscow, which runs a charity project, Alfa-Endo, that helps children affected by endocrine ailments. The projects website includes a presentation by Maria.
Maria told Reuters in an email that requests for information about the centre should be directed to its leadership. She did not respond to questions about when she was married or whether her fathers position had affected her career.
Alfa-Endo is funded by Alfa Bank, a large Russian bank with subsidiaries in the United States, Britain and Cyprus. The largest shareholder is Mikhail Fridman, a billionaire with interests in banking, energy and telecoms. An official at the bank said: Alfa Bank, and broadly speaking Alfa Group, act as financial sponsors for the project and thats it We are not aware who else is participating in the project otherwise.
Marias husband used to work for Gazprombank, a large lender with strong links to the elite around Putin. And until at least August this year, Jorrit Joost Faassen was listed on the website of MEF Audit, a Russian consulting group, as its deputy chairman. He no longer appears on the website and did not respond to requests for comment.

(246 posts)Alfa Bank appears to be a central player in this. It is the bank that communicated with Trump's server - as per the Slate article. It is also connected to Mr. Burt, who says he helped Trump craft his first foreign policy speech - as per the Politico article. Do you suppose this entity would show up in the Trump tax returns? Follow the money.

Soon, the New York Times Eric Lichtblau and Steven Lee Myers began chasing the story. (They are still pursuing it.) Lichtblau met with a Washington representative of Alfa Bank on Sept. 21, and the bank denied having any connection to Trump. (Lichtblau told me that Times policy prevents him from commenting on his reporting.)
Or as it is technically diagnosed, it had SERVFAILed. (On the timeline above, this is the moment at the end of the chronology when the traffic abruptly spikes, as servers frantically attempt to resend rejected messages.) The computer scientists believe there was one logical conclusion to be drawn: The Trump organization shut down the server after Alfa was told that the Times might expose the connection. Nicholas Weaver told me the Trump domain was very sloppily removed. Or as another of the researchers put it, it looked like the knee was hit in Moscow, the leg kicked in New York.
From:
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/cover_story/2016/10/was_a_server_registered_to_the_trump_organization_communicating_with_russia.html
Four days later, on September 27, the Trump organization created a new host name, trump1.contact-client.com, which enabled communication to the very same server via a different route. When a new host name is created, the first communication with it is never random. To reach the server after the resetting of the host name, the sender of the first inbound mail has to first learn of the name somehow. Its simply impossible to randomly reach a renamed server. That party had to have some kind of outbound message through sms, phone, or some non-internet channel they used to communicate [the new configuration], Paul Vixie told me. The first attempt to look up the revised host name came from Alfa Bank. If this was a public server, we would have seen other traces, Vixie says. The only look-ups came from this particular source.
According to Vixie and others, the new host name may have represented an attempt to establish a new channel of communication. But media inquiries into the nature of Trumps relationship with Alfa Bank, which suggested that their communications were being monitored, may have deterred the parties from using it. Soon after the New York Times began to ask questions, the traffic between the servers stopped cold.

(1,553 posts)If someone within the Trump organization wanted to enlist a private server with a direct connection to the Russian Alfa Bank, why would they allow the Trump name to be traceable through any means. It seems if you are good enough to initiate this system, you would be good enough to hide the origin? Just a skeptical thought, that puzzles me.

(4,033 posts)First, yes, if Paul Vixie is on it, it is the equivalent of Nobel commenting on the properties of dynamite, or Marie Curie commenting on radium.
My quibble is on something at the very end of the article, where it says: "The very reason DNS exists is to enable email (and other means of communication.)" This is somewhat akin to saying that gasoline exists is to run your lawnmower (and other means of propulsion).
"Other means of communication" include every internet address you type in. You want to go to DU? You have to do a DNS lookup to find out the IP address of DU. (It is then cached on your local system for a period of time). DNS make the internet, including email, work.
