Conservative Republicans fight back after Romney loss

Evangelical leaders and conservative activists have a simple message for establishment Republicans about Mitt Romney’s failed presidential bid: We told you so.

After nearly two weeks of listening to GOP officials pledge to assert greater control over the party and its most strident voices in the wake of Romney’s loss, grass-roots activists have begun to fight back, saying that they are not to blame for the party’s losses in November.

“The moderates have had their candidate in 2008 and they had their candidate in 2012. And they got crushed in both elections. Now they tell us we have to keep moderating. If we do that, will we win?” said Bob Vander Plaats, president of the Family Leader. Vander Plaats is an influential Christian conservative who opposed Romney in the Iowa caucuses 10 months ago and opposed Sen. John McCain’s candidacy four years ago.

They carry so much weight in the Republican Party that the Republicans in Congress kowtow to their every wish and/or fear their wrath if they bend ever so slightly on anything yet they still can't get their supposedly superior ultra-conservative candidates nominated. BTW Romney ran as a "severe conservative" for most of the campaign and basically said and did everything they wanted, so WTF are they complaining about?

And here's just some free advice for 2016: Go right ahead and run Rick Santorum and try to get him nominated!

The new version of the GOP is the TEA PARTY. Each car company has its different models. The GOP has several conservative models which they "support."

I honestly can't tell. The media seems to treat the "Tea Party" as a separate entity of "concerned citizens". Last year they had "Tea Party representatives" on to discuss issues like drug testing welfare recipients. Of course, they only parroted right-wing Republican talking points and AFAIK Tea Party members are only composed of Republicans or "former Republicans". I've heard some claim that there are some Democrats among them but I can't imagine what self-loving Democrats would be part of the Tea Party movement, which, as far as I can tell, seems to have started out in 2009 as a reactionary anti-Obama movement.

Nah probably not. When he loses, they'll probably just say that Santorum wasn't CONSERVATIVE ENOUGH either.

You know, I would actually like to see the Republicans run the most batshit crazy ultra-conservative they can find if for no other reason that to convince people en masse that the GOP has, finally, completely lost it. I think that that actually could have happened this year if there hadn't been so many anti-Romneys running for the nomination allowing Romney to basically "survive" his way to the nomination.

Never interupt your opponent when he is in the middle of a mistake. If they run a more Conservative candidate in 2016, they will get blown out by 220 EVs, let them do it.

I'm not convinced a more conservative candidate would have received as many votes as Romney received overall (IMO). I could be wrong though.

His poll numbers shot up after the first debate when he suddenly became "Moderate Mitt" and looked like a reasonable alternative to the undecided crowd. Thank God that illusion didn't last. But if he had continued being Severely Conservative Mitt he would have gotten far less than 47% of the popular vote. Glad the Repug party is too dense to see that.

Between Anonymous backing us and the swing of the country left, this election really gave me hope for the future. This coming election is when the repugs will pull out all the stops, but progress is inevitable. There is not one, single part of their platform that is tolerable to the average American anymore. This is why they can't win an election- we now need to look into all available ways we can continue the ball rolling on the majority, find ways to lock out anyone who doesn't get with the program, and continue until we can finally achieve one party dominance over the repigs, relegating them to history's dustbin and leaving the Democrats as the sole, electable party of the American People.

Even Jim Messina himself admitted that the GOP candidate the Obama team feared the most was Jon Huntsman, who BTW was considered the most moderate Republican out of the bunch. And he was nowhere close to getting the nod. Instead they nominated a wannabe-wingnut, and were thoroughly blown out. Republicans won't learn until their party finally goes the way of the dodo.
