What I got from the debate is that Pence is cutting his losses with his eye on 2020.

He did not defend Trump effectively at all. Either ignored attacks or said falsely not true with no rebuttal.
Yes he won on style, narrowly I think. But not on debating points. There it wasn't even close.

And he basically washed his hand of Trump

This will become a wedge issue hrc can use

Pence was in it for Pence, and he represented himself fairly well. Kaine was in it for the ticket, and he stood up for HRC and sacrificed personal likeability to score points for the ticket. The debate won't move the needle much, but overall I think our team comes out ahead. Kaine landed some blows on Trump, but blocked Pence's attacks.
