Bombshell report on Trump taxes sends GOP nominee reeling
Bombshell report on Trump taxes sends GOP nominee reeling
It puts an exclamation point on what was already one of the worst weeks for any presidential candidate in recent memory. By ELI STOKOLS 10/01/16 10:48 PM EDT Updated 10/01/16 11:58 PM EDT It took less than a day for October to produce an "October surprise." Donald Trump reported a nearly $1 billion loss on his 1995 tax returns and could therefore have avoided paying federal income taxes for almost two decades, the New York Times reported on Saturday, putting another unexpected exclamation point on what had already been one of the worst weeks for any presidential nominee in recent memory. The Times, which hired tax experts to analyze the records, determined that “tax rules that are especially advantageous to wealthy filers would have allowed Mr. Trump to use his $916 million loss to cancel out an equivalent amount of taxable income over an 18-year period” -- more than $50 million a year. Times reporter Susanne Craig received the documents, which the paper describes as “three pages from what appeared to be Mr. Trump’s 1995 tax returns,” in the mail from an unknown source. http://www.politico.com/story/2016/10/donald-trump-tax-records-new-york-times-229012

4. I have a feeling that Trump...
himself released this tax return. If someone wanted to hurt Trump with a tax leak, they would have released his 2015 or 2014 taxes. The only thing that this tax return shows is that's he didn't have to pay taxes for nearly 2 decades. That just sets uo the perfect situation for Trump to say that there is no need to release any tax returns since he didn't have to claim any income.

But it plays perfectly into Trump's (small) hands as an excuse not to release his more damning taxes.
Regardless, I hope this hurts him. |

18. Of course it hurts him. An "alleged" billionaire not pay his share of taxes while everyone . . .
else does, how could that not hurt him?
And this revelation comes on top of his sneering remark in the debate that that "means I'm smart". Yeah, that hurts him. He'll be smarting over that until his election day loss. He's toast. |

9. Probably, seems like a state employee risked their job or prison time...
...to release these returns to the NYT.
Only a handful of people would've had access to these returns. Hopefully it was someone who retired years ago who decided to make a copy just for prosperity sake and they got it from a chest in their attic. They wouldn't be caught. |

15. Doh, yeah I did.
But yeah, you're retiring, you remember that one smug mogul from the state who had a series of casino busts, and remember that you made a copy of those filings back in the day because it just blew your mind... filed the copy away a decade and a half ago just because it was so big, biggest thing to cross your desk.
Years later same mogul is the Republican Presidential nominee. You suddenly remember making that copy all those years ago... Or you work in the local state IRS, know you can get access to the filing pretty easily, since you're always down in the filing room. You take a sneak peak, see it's in there, decide to discretely take the filing up to the copiers and make a copy while on another case. First case, you're unlikely to be caught. Second case the entire state IRS filing room is under scrutiny. Word gets around that office pretty easily. Personalities get revealed. Allegiances get narrowed down. High suspects are those who are for Hillary or dislike Trump. Office politics gets routed. Could get ugly. |

23. That is a reasonable hypothesis
I wonder, though, do you think this will get him to release any tax returns? Or do you think there is no chance he might do so?
Also, will anyone actually care? Other than those who already oppose him, of course. |

14. -Or-
similar to this - http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/11/politics/donald-trump-casino-licenses-tax-returns/
I friggin' forgot about him applying for a casino here in Philly when the state legalized gambling. I.e., he has had other years released because of his quest to expand by building a casino here in PA 10 years ago... Many of us followed this closely. http://www.forbes.com/2006/08/11/trump-philadelphia-gaming-cx_gl_0811autofacescan02.html http://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/files/impact_reports/Keystone_Redev_Public_Hearing_Presentation_Part_2_0f_2%20.pdf He was also going to buy some of the old Taskycake Bakery land to add to his casino project when Tasty was preparing to move (the bakery eventually moved to the Naval Business Center in South Philly). I think Home Depot ended up in that spot. As I have said in other posts on DU, the man was prolific and the past 40 years is chock full of info on his endeavors and failures. |

16. Ooh, that's a good angle, but it looks like those are from 2000.
This is a really old filing and a very notable filing, one that pretty much lays the foundation for Trumps tax return strategy for almost two decades. I mean, who is going to really believe Trump didn't take advantage of the tax breaks? It's laughable. He took advantage of them, no question about it. Hell, that's why he's under constant audit. You keep invoking this huge tax break and the IRS is going to look it over and over again and make sure nothing is amiss.

24. But note that those
would fall under that "18 year" range from the earlier '90s filings... and may confirm how long he skated tax-free. I expect someone is on it...
He really really does have a lot out there in media archives and it WAS reported on prolifically as it was happening. But the bluster in which he operated by continually generating more and more "new and exciting" ventures, seemed to help him to keep kicking the investigations of his criminal activity down the road. In essence - he has been doing stuff like this - ![]() ![]() which is so ludicrous that one would miss what's going on behind his closed doors because we are like WTF? ![]() |

25. The only way he released on purpose is if he DID pay substantial taxes in 2014 or 2015
If there is a recent year where he did pay taxes, he can release a recent tax return and defuse the whole issue- but the proof will be if he continues to not release even one recent tax return to disprove the allegations that he hasn't been paying any taxes.

8. But won't somebody check out that sex
tape, and for the love of god, also call Sean Hannity.
The Trump campaign is going to have to hold a little meeting real soon about how to spin the tax story. The NYTimes took careful aim and this arrow hit its mark. Katrina Pierson will have to decide what kind of necklace to wear. Michael Cohen will have to get his gruff guy act polished up for yet another "Says who?" defense on the talk shows. Gonna be a tense week in Trumpville. |

20. Going off on Hillary is the diversion, and this news isn't the last drop in a now overflowing bucket
The dike has broken. His little fingers just couldn't hold back the epic flood of bad news. The election is over and he knows the futility at present cannot be overcome. The only way left for him to avoid the greatest humiliation in the history of democracy is to attack Hillary, at least in his thinking. Meanwhile, he is just creating sympathy for her at this point.
Clinton knew this was coming. Go back and review the debate. The Dems have done their homework, including opposition research. That's why the Republicans hacked the DNC, to see what the Dems knew. That 400 pound gorilla sitting on the bed isn't going away either. Wait until this scandal breaks! ![]() How many more October Surprises do you expect? I'm thinking about one a day! ![]() |

26. If me memory is correct those binders behind Nixon
are transcripts of tapes relating to the Watergate burglary.
What makes this photo so typically Republican is that Nixon used this photo op (it was part of a speech) to demonstrate how "cooperative" he was being with the special prosecutor. Except, as it was subsequently reported, each binder contained something like ten actual pages. In other words--more BS from the BSer-in-chief. God, these Republicans! |
