2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNY Times editorial: By refusing to release returns, Trump "is disqualifying himself as a candidate"
Excerpts:
All major party nominees for president going back nearly 40 years have released their tax returns except Donald Trump. That leads to a simple question: What is he hiding?
...
Mr. Trump has offered nothing but fallacious excuses for keeping his returns secret. Initially, he said he would not release returns until the Internal Revenue Service completed an ongoing audit; the agency said theres no rule stopping disclosure during an audit. Recently, one of his sons said the returns are so long and complex that people would ask too many questions if they were allowed to see them. None of these claims make sense.

(8,452 posts)He's either not paid taxes for years and/or isn't worth what he spouts that he's worth. Either way, the trumpers don't care. And honestly, they are the problem more so than Trump. Seriously, if he wins, it will be the worst thing that could happen to America and if he loses, these trumpers will say it was rigged and will want to burn the house down. Damn if we do, damned if we don't.

(32,640 posts)He's built this whole persona of "big winner," that his fans adore. Like the poor whites who looked at that plantation house on the hill, and thought that someday, that'll be them.
If he lied about being a "big winner" financially, that might be unforgivable.

(56,840 posts)My guess:
1) After subtracting his debts to Russia, China and Saudi Arabia, The Donald is worth less than $100 million. Possibly less than $50 million.
2) Trump owes hundreds of millions to Russia, China and Saudi Arabia
3) Trump's charitable donations are negligible.
4) His tax rate paid is well under 10%
5) He took advantage of a lot of tax breaks that should not have been allowed.

Is that letter so private that the IRS could confirm or deny that such a letter exists?
Here is what I hope. The October surprise is the IRS saying they never sent an audit letter for the past year.

(120,302 posts)hitler. if you had actually done your jobs as journalists, told the truth about this sick, twisted, perverted, lying, thieving, misogynistic, bigoted, hate-mongering pos, he would not be the nominee of the pukes.
not sure what it is going to take for you, and all the rest of the msm, to redeem yourselves. not sure you can.
