Congratulations, Sanders DNC delegates, you just killed his movement and his revolution.

Heckling, booing, jeering, African-American leaders like Marcia Fudge and Elijah Cummings talking about civil rights, giving prayers, talking about defeating Donald Trump?

Booing Bernie Sanders? When he talks about the need to defeat Donald Trump.

You are sending a very clear message--that the core activists in the Sanders movement are fanatics. That they are incapable of playing a constructive role in anything. That they are nothing but anarchists and vandals looking to break stuff out of anger. That there is no point in working with them.

This is not fair to the greater number of Sanders voters out there, who did have an optimistic vision for the country's future and for our political process.

But, because you can't control your glands, you've taken that all and flushed it down the toilet.

Anger, childishness, petulance, hate--those are the last images people are going to have of his movement--because you couldn't be bothered to show an ounce of respect towards people who disagree with you.

You had a great responsibility to Sanders, to his voters, and yes to the party you pledged to support as a delegate.

And you failed everyone. Because you don't know anything other than to lash out if you don't get 100% of what you want.

Revolutions and activism need to be carried out by adults who know what they're doing. Letting adolescent amateurs carry the standard has predictable and catastrophic consequences.

39. Settle down, Beavis

People expressing their opinions loudly is a time-honored tradition. It means, mostly, that the Democratic Party may attempt an artificial party loyalty, but free-thinking people will have none of that.

It is part of the process.

46. I agree with Gwen Moore...this is how we protest

People are upset that the tables were weighted. Many of us who supported Bernie wonder if he could be the nominee knowing what has happened. People have a right to protest.

We must unite...but when there is wrongdoing, it really fuels anger in some.

I will still vote for HRC, but I am angry at the process that has led us to this.

152. You're not going to earn respect for Sanders' ideas by disrespecting

an icon like Elijah Cummings by shouting throughout his entire speech.

That level of disrespect - offered by a bunch of armchair revolutionaries - directed at a man who has walked the walk and personally bled for civil rights, does nothing but alienate potential allies.

No one was hurt more today by this disgusting behavior than was Sen Sanders.

163. People keep blaming him for the actions of a few.

People can speak out and it is frustrating knowing the deck was stacked. I don't blame them for being angry, but protests don't get any air if they stay in the prescribed area with the prescribed decibel level. They shouted during EVERY speaker up there. It was not a rant against Cummings. They were equal opportunity shouting. Hopefully they are done now that he has spoken.

166. Well, there's the problem right there. A problem of perception.

Just how was the deck stacked against Sanders? It wasn't. No one should be surprised that people within the DNC preferred a lifelong D like Hillary over Bernie who had been openly disparaging of the Party for years. The question is whether the DNC acted in any way to disadvantage Sanders in the primaries. The existence of two e-mails out of 20,000 expressing negative opinions about Sanders hardly constitutes stacking the deck. But here we have some of Sanders' supporters - yourself included - who make a mountain out of a molehill and use said mountain as an excuse to disrespect - as you point out - EVERY speaker at the convention.

These protests were planned weeks in advance of the convention. You're using this molehill as justification for actions that would have taken place whether those two emails were revealed on Saturday or not. The BoB movement goes back months. Your stating as fact that the deck was stacked against Sanders is nothing more than straining to find an excuse for why Sanders lost. The accusation that this or that primary was rigged against Sanders was hauled out like clockwork after each Hillary victory. No one is surprised that you and other Sanders supporters would latch on to something as insignificant as this email dust up to prove to yourselves that every evil you could have imagined was true.

There was nothing noble in the disgusting behavior of these adolescent-minded protestors yesterday. Nothing at all.

All they prove is that a few people within the DNC didn't like Sanders and expressed those feelings in email. There was no collusion at all. Indeed, no action was taken at all stemming from those emails.

26. Attention.

The same thing some purported Sanders supporters on DU wanted all along. It was never about Sanders. It was about calling attention to themselves. They're the same ones who demanded that everyone kiss their asses before they'd even consider voting for Clinton, all the while having no intention of doing so. It was a small percentage of the whole, but they were very vocal. Some of them are still around.

I sincerely hope that they (and those throwing their little hissy fits at the convention) were never Sanders supporters to begin with and that they were/are mostly GOP infiltrators. The alternative is pretty disturbing, though the thought of infiltrators at our convention isn't much better.

That said, I don't hold with delegates disrupting speakers at the convention. However, I think the email dump and its timing has caused some emotions to overload past the boiling point, among the Bernie delegates who are all "true believers". It's quite understandable.

69. ...Or they were attempting to hold the platform committee chairman accountable for his vote...

The Democratic Party establishment and Sec. Clinton's campaign staff need to step back and examine what has led to Trump's popularity and Sanders' popularity. If they do not unite with Sanders' message more fully and more convincingly, it is very possible that Sec. Clinton will lose the election.

Democrats Prioritize Party Unity Over Including Stand Against TPP In Platform
Kevin Gosztola - 25 June 2016

Members of the Democratic National Convention Platform Committee shot down an attempt to include specific opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal in the platform, despite the fact that both Democratic presidential candidates have taken positions against the TPP.

The attempt failed because members appointed by Hillary Clinton and DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz claimed it was improper to oppose the TPP when President Barack Obama fervently believes in the agreement. However, by putting party unity before taking a firm stand against the trade agreement, the door was left open for Clinton to go back to supporting the TPP, which was the case when she was secretary of state.

...

Even platform committee chair, Representative E.J. Cummings, chose to vote against the resolution. He, too, bragged about not voting for trade agreements.

“I don’t want to do anything as he ends his term to undercut the president of the United States. I’m just not going to do it. And that’s where I stand,” Cummings proclaimed. “It wouldn’t bother me. It would be a harder decision if the language that we have in the document did not already go to what we feel going forward. But in his last six months, I’m not going to do that. So, that’s where I stand.”

...

https://shadowproof.com/2016/06/25/democrats-prioritize-party-unity-including-stand-tpp-platform/

Of course, one may malign and belittle these people as much as one desires. The question remains whether one wants their votes enough to try to get them on board with Sec. Clinton.

This is where the Democratic Party establishment and the supporters of Sec. Clinton actually need to work to earn the unity that will give Sec. Clinton a chance to win the election.

102. I am sorry your attitude is such, especially toward fellow Democrats

My perspective from the DNC floor as a Bernie delegate is that the schedule of speakers and voting is totally wrong. The vote for the nominee should be held prior to any guest speaker, or especially the Chair or other DNC official implies who the nominee will be, regardless of whether we ALL know who the nominee will be. The continual mentioning of the presumed nominee prior to an actual vote perpetuates the resentfulness and negative attitude toward the system. Be neutral until the vote....AND after the vote....then yay - we can all be officially for Hillary!

P.S. Instead of shouting bernie or hillary, i am shouting DEMOCRATS! I hope you can enjoy the convention in spite of the raucous Berners who want and fight for a fair democracy.

Cheers and onward to November!

Obama ran the 2008 convention and picked all of the speakers, and was officially nominated after a couple of days.

The convention is there to rubber stamp the voters and promote the nominee. Not to actually pick the nominee--that's done by the voters.

Hold your breath, stamp you feet. Go ahead and show her, vote for Trump or don't vote at all. Then when you wake up one day and Dictator Trump is taking the country to authoritarian land, you can be happy that your last vote 'meant something'.

“The best thing for being sad,” replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, “is to learn something. That’s the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.”

110. I was a strong Bernie supporter until he refused to call for civil behavior from the hardcores.

Perfect example of how a grinding primary battle eventually reveals true character -- the endless vitriol was effing bizarre, ridiculous, counterproductive, STUPID, and a man I held up as the best possible civil servant refused to speak up against it. He just let that shit roll out like it was real and not mental illness expressed through politics.

It was a devastating mistake, in my opinion. I'm glad he's at long last calling for civility from his supporters -- but the strident boos and accusations of being a sellout are now aimed at him. I continue to believe that had he taken a stand early on this issue and ruthlessly enforced a standard of civil discourse at every turn he might have lost a few crazies but kept people like me in his camp and actually pulled this thing out.

I learned a lot in the last year. A great deal. Things I'll never forget.

I have never hated Hillary, not ever, period. And to that small but very vocal percentage of my fellow Sanders supporters that was equivalent to parading around with a baby on a pitchfork.

Fuck that shit. The imperfect is not the enemy of the good. We're all imperfect, even Bernie.

Mad she had been "silenced". But that is exactly what some in the crowd were doing to the speakers. They are trying to silence them by drowning them out. This is not why I supported Bernie. I will still support Bernie's causes, just not the route some are using there.

124. You don't get it...

The anger that is being expressed, some of it pretty poorly, has always been there and will always be there, and it's not Sander's movement or revolution, it's just anger at an unequal system. The Democratic Party isn't adequately addressing it, and many of the powerful and privileged political elite are all about perpetuating it. At best, many people understand the Democratic Party is the better alternative, but it ain't much beyond that, and that's the issue.

All of your criticisms of them are incredibly condescending and part of the problem. More than that, activism is indeed carried out by "amateur activists" all the time. And it can take literally hundreds of years for the message and activism on any issue to find its footing. Your criticisms could be word for word what I've seen of the BLM movement, and it will be just as constructive.

150. Why would you think fellow Dems do not understand about an "unequal system"?

We do get it and always have. It is a harsh fact of life for the majority of women and minorities, all of whom are arguably more impacted by the existence of a powerful and privileged political elite. Having our progress or rights with the Dem Party treated as "ain't much" is a serious threat. The Dem Party isn't just a slightly better alternative, it is a massively, life changing, no comparison to the GOP better alternative for us. We get it that those differences in circumstances "ain't much" to many of the people in the movement. The push back you see in terms of Party loyalty comes not from our misunderstanding but yours.

162. I think the OP doesn't get fellow Dems...

no need to twist my words and make a strawman. The "movement" that Sanders represents to many has always been there and will always be there, and it's not going away. It's ideas about what make for a better society, and some of it conflicts with the Democraric Party. Fellow Dems will differ on how much they think their leaders should be held accountable and how they should be held accountable versus how much people should bite the bullet, and that will always be a debate, but the movement isn't going away, and that's what the OP doesn't get.

The Democratic Party is better than the GOP, but unfortunately, many comparisons CAN be made, on trade agreements without worker protections, on wars abroad, on corporate lobbying, on financial regulation, on the justice system, on election reform, on education, on healthcare, on Social Security... these issues that are part of what drive the unequal system and where the Democratic Party is often times very similar to the GOP, or way too similar for comfort. That will drive criticism going forward until there is change, and that isn't going away.

171. The problem is not anger at an unequal system

It is that the substance the arguments leaves out minorities and women and disregards issues that are specific to them. A prime demonstration of that is the fact that having had that just explained to you, you replied with a recitation of ills that addressed those issues not once. And no, problems specific to minority groups and women are not subsumed by the issues on your list.

Furthermore, characterizing the Dem position on the justice system, healthcare, education, environment, election reform and social security as the same as the GOP's is simply false and causes those who are uninformed to make insane decisions like voting for Jill Stein. If you agree with Senator Sanders, are you even listening to him imploring people not to make that ghastly mistake?

The problem is not the "anger" towards a system, it is the fact that it has been misdirected towards minorities, women and the organizations that support them who deserve the highest degree of support rather than attack. If people are repeatedly telling you they experience the way the movement is dealing with their "cause" and "anger" as damaging to them, it would behoove you to listen because women and minorities are not going away either.

As for the point the OP is trying to make, the deaf ears you experience from the PTB and "elite" is exactly what minorities and women experience from the movement. The "revolution" absolutely needs those millions of people and one of the reasons it lost them is because of its constant failure to address those flaws and inadequacies. That will continue to drive the criticism of the movement going forward and until there is change, it isn't going away.

172. The "movement"

I'm talking about are progressives in general. The party is becoming more liberal, and it's certainly not just young white Bernie supporters, but many people feel he represented the policies of part of the progressive ideal in ways few nominees have in a long time in the party. The US is not a very progressive country. And there is disagreement on how to move forward. Many progressives think exactly what you say of the Bernie or Busters, and I agree with it, but that progressive section of the party isn't going away, and there is a vocal portion that will continue trying to push the Democrats to the left.

The Democratic position on many parts of those issues is indeed similar (not the same), and in some cases the same, as the GOP, these are big areas where some progressives see a lot of overlap between the parties, unlike gender issues, or specific minority issues, where the difference is much more stark. And that is where some progressives will focus and push Democrats. Ignoring or downplaying the overlap is expected when trying to get unity, but it's there.

It's not surprising to me that different demographic groups have different priorities, but the progressive movement in the Democratic Party will keep growing regardless, and amateur activists have always been a part of the process. I don't think progressives are united at all, I think the stark racial divides in support for candidates reflect part of that, and don't think that's easy to do, especially in a two party system, but they aren't going anywhere, and they aren't new either. Progressives will reflect the same segregation, divides, and misunderstandings of society in general, and any united progressive movement would have to address all of those issues first.

People aren't always nice and polite. We are filled with embarrassing traits. I don't run for the smelling salts though, I dig in and fight for what I believe in.

And I believe in the Sanders Revolution as not one individual. It's never been about just Bernie, which is why he too got booed. It's about changing the face of politics to serve the masses that you clearly despise.

I'm in it for the long haul. I'm also voting for Hillary this election. But I'm not throwing away passionate young voices even if they behave in a manner that I wouldn't. They care passionately about this country and want to see us do better. So do I.
