2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Cause of the Tightening Polls
I've been reading a bit about the polls from the last week or two and there is a consensus on two points. First, Clinton's support has dropped a bit but at the same time, Trump's hasn't gone up. Trump is still stuck at the 39% level and hasn't gained any supporters in months. Second, the cause is likely due to some Sanders supporters that had started to get onboard but may have become more reluctant following the FBI announcement. That is why you see Clintons poll numbers dropping a bit and more people falling into the "undecided" group than had been a few weeks ago. However, many of the political experts out there (the real ones, not Chuck Todd and Wolf Blitzer) think the loss is support is a momentary blip, something that is causing a transient hesitation before people drift back to Clinton. Since the email "scandal" is moving into the rearview mirror and is being drowned out by more pressing news stories, people will likely begin to move on and forget about it.
I predict (using a fortune teller i bought out of the back of a comic book) that a bizarre republican convention, followed by a VP pick and a solid democratic gathering in philly, will be the breakout moment. 4 days of healing and party unity will bring our wayward brothers and sisters back into the fold to crush trump come november. Write. It. Down! (or don't, I'm not your mother).

(320 posts)I don't care, really, what is causing it. It scares the hell out of me. Further, she hasn't gained a dime's worth from all the money spent in swing states, meanwhile Trump has spent ZIP.
All performance of Trump, including his bizarre backing out of his Pence anointment, is horrific and STILL Hillary is dropping.

Pollsters can pretty much get whatever result they want, by shaping the demographics of their sample.
If you ran a polling company, would you want the race to be close or a blowout?
