(58,785 posts)why Sanders hasn't returned any of her phone calls or communiques during this election. For me at least, a little taste of that kind of self-delusional thinking, and the irrational, immoral hostility it inevitably produces, constitutes a surfeit.
I wouldn't trust a person like that to run an animal shelter for fear she'd take a dislike to some poor animal, and here she is a technically real candidate for President of the United States.

noun
an excessive amount of something.
"a surfeit of food and drink"
verb
cause (someone) to desire no more of something as a result of having consumed or done it to excess.
I've heard the word but never looked it up. Thanks!
ETA: I agree with your eloquently expressed impression of Ms. Stein's statement.

Jill Stein is not, however. But I guess it takes a ton of ego and another ton of fantasy for her to think she could run this country.

(144,939 posts)Senator Sanders promised to support the nominee of the Democratic Party and to work to defeat Donald Trump. Senator Sanders is a man of his word and honored his promises.
In addition, Senator Sanders was very strong in his endorsement of Sec. Clinton. I applaud Senator Sanders for his actions and I am amused by the disappointed by Stein and the Green party
Democrats Ascendant
(601 posts)Sanders is a man who is true to his word, and this is one of the primary reasons he had such a wide following. Stein's cheap, empty, Trump-like pandering misses the point of the Sanders revolution entirely.

(11,605 posts)She is competing with Hillary for Bernie supporters' votes. I don't see what is strange about that.
I do agree with her about rank choice voting. I think it would be useful in the primaries as well. A few weeks ago, I had to choose in my Congressional primary between voting for the one I really wanted and voting for the one with the best chance to defeat the candidate I didn't like. Instant runoff voting would have enabled me to really have my voice heard.
Democrats Ascendant
(601 posts)It's that she's as bad at understanding and courting Sanders supporters as Trump. Doesn't get them at all, in my opinion.

(1,630 posts)And, had he done so, she would be the obvious choice for VP. Attaching herself to him has given her much more visibility and credibility. It is no surprise that she would use this moment to take advantage of Bernie's disappointed supporters for herself. As long as they work to prevent Trump or any of the GOP from getting into office, it is not a problem. If they aid and abet a GOP majority, they are actively working to oppose progressive goals and what Bernie wants.

She'll get some votes, I suppose. Gary Johnson's going to do a lot better, though, if Trump is the GOP nominee. Flocks of Republicans are going to vote Libertarian. That will help our nominee win.
TwilightZone
(25,428 posts)If she mumbles through the rest of it like she did those two minutes, it kind of indirectly explains a lot.
As for votes, she got 0.35% in 2012. She might get 1% this time. I agree that Johnson will do better, though I'd be surprised if he gets more than about 3-4%. He'll do better than his 1% from 2012, however, thanks to Trump.

She sings in tune, but that's about it. Not much oomph in her voice. I suppose they got a few freebie gigs here and there and did their own recordings. It's a lot of small garage bands out there. They're fun to be in, but never go too far, usually.

(11,175 posts)Given the record-high unfavorables of the major-party nominees, I think the minor parties will do better than you project. The Libertarians have a shot at hitting 5% to qualify for federal matching funds. The Greens might well do better than 1% though I'm inclined to think they'll fall short of the 2.74% they got in 2000 with Nader as the nominee.
I further predict that neither will get to 15% in the pre-election polling, and therefore neither will be in the debates.

afaik there are no green party candidates for state or US rep running.
If they cant be bothered to run a candidate in Austin they certainly arent a serious party

(13,889 posts)Being a Euro I'd like to be able to support the green party, they line up with a bunch of issues I care about. But they have virtually no presence at the local level and when I last talked to some green supporters (in 2012) they were all focused on the Presidential election election and seemed to have little interest in campaigning for state offices etc. etc.. Honestly, I think they're just trying to break the threshold that would get them public funding and have no interest in politics beyond that. If they did surely they could have elected one person to the house or senate by now, or got one governorship, or something.

(95,337 posts)I agree w/ Hillary, it's time to elect a woman for President. But I want that President to reflect the values of being a mother. #MothersDay
Dr. Jill Stein (@DrJillStein) May 8, 2016
I respect there are many criticisms about Hillary Clinton. But as far as I can tell she has been an amazing mother. Chelsea Clinton has turned out to be an amazing young woman. To diss Hillary on Mother's day with that above quote pretty much made me realize that Jill Stein is an ignorant woman who will stoop to incredibly low levels to try and siphon off a few votes. I can honestly say I have more respect for Ralph Nader than I do this woman. (and that's saying alot since the only respect I ever had for Nader was ages ago when he helped to make automobiles safer. That's about it)

(11,175 posts)The big question for the Greens is how many disaffected Bernie supporters they can pull in. Stein's statement isn't aimed at Clinton voters. Instead, her goal was to walk the fine line between disagreeing with Bernie and nevertheless trying to appeal to his supporters.
A non-ridiculous statement would have been "I've come to see the folly of third-party politics" but I didn't really expect that from her.
