2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumGood news re: Virginia
My buddy is a lawyer in Northern VA and is part of the Dem team monitoring polls in NOVA. Says turnout is "massive!"
but is it massive pro Obama or massive "pro lets get the black socialist" outa office?

(1,136 posts)And remember, don't freak about VA votes until the Northern Virginia numbers start coming in. You will get a rush of smaller red counties coming in first. Take deep breaths and wait.

(13,418 posts)the other day, and the pollster dude said to watch the 2 counties outside of Alexandria and Fairfax....now I can't remember the names....was one Richmond and the other Madison??? Well the 2 to the west that border Alex and Fair.
He said those 2 could determine how the entire state will go.
For Ohio, it was Hamilton (Cincy) to watch.
For FL, it was the county that Tampa is in.
I can't remember anymore....Iowa might have been Des Moines.
I should have written them down. poop.

(5,251 posts)I saw it from Fred Yang on Ed Show last night. Hillsborough, where Tampa is, Hamilton in Ohio, and as the previous poster said, Loudoun and PW Counties in Virginia. Good results for Obama in these areas would be very, very good signs.

(13,418 posts)memory help. I never remember where I see things...so I can never get a link and then no one believes me. Yes, Fred Yang. It was very informative.
I would love to have Nate Silverman show us how he does his probabilities....he said he uses 'dovetailing' as a technique...whatever that is.

(375 posts)For those who know NoVa I voted at Luther Jackson Middle School, on Gallows Road near 50. I went there at 10:20 and waited 50 minutes before I could get out. Guys from my office (one lives in Prince William) said the turnout was heavy.

(80,521 posts)So cool to see so many new DUers (and those who simply have low post-counts)! Glad you're here! Wouldn't that be amazing if it did turn out to be an early night because it was called decisively for Obama? Man. It would be neat to see a wave of blue start washing across the map, working its way from east to west!

(2,702 posts)I posted earlier that I have never had to wait more than 20 minutes to vote. Today I waited 2 hours!
Edit to add that there were a large number of minorities voting, which is great to see. White males like myself were definitely in the minority! Plus not many people were asking for the Republican sample ballot, and some poor reporter had a hard time finding someone he could interview to say why they were voting for Romney. Great signs all around.

(220 posts)Took me 1.5 hours to vote and counted approximate 125 people behind me. Visited two other locations and they were mobbed at 2:30. Election Officer told me the wait was 2 hrs in the early morning and they were guessing the last vote wouldn't be until 830 (they tag the end of the line at 7). Said it was "much bigger than 08"
It was a pretty amazing visual.

(332 posts)It took me a good hour and 20 minutes to vote, and unlike past elections I didn't see the usual GOP poll watchers anywhere..
Now I find it REALLY unusual that Virginia is going to be called early..??!! Hmmmm.....

My cousin and her family live in Manassas and are unrepentant teabaggers (she's spamming my facebook feed today). Glad to hear their votes are being cancelled out (mine already cancelled hers out, thankfully, but I'm registered in Charlottesville).

(89 posts)My family and I were voted this morning in Arlington, VA. The line was much longer than 2008 and appeared very Pres. Obama friendly (lots of cars in the lot with stickers and such). As we walked up to the school, a very irate GOP poll watcher was complaining to a neighborhood GOP person that the election officials made him take his notebook that was totally covered in R$/Lyin/NObama stickers outside. We waited in line (35 minutes) and were ready to vote. We noticed that the same GOP poll watcher was being told that he now had to take outside his very obvious GOP folder outside too. We stopped at the bake sale the school always has and the neighborhood GOP person said of the GOP poll watcher, "He is not from around here and is a bit of an a$$hole." I am hoping Virginia stays True Blue today.

(435 posts)BTW ... I forgot to add this to my first post, Republican Senator candidate George Allen votes at Washington Mill Elem. School here in Alexandria, he hung around for an hour and a half and then left, Wash DC's NBC channel 4 was there to film him in front of 200+ voters awaiting the 6 AM poll opening ...
Allen is an idiot and scumbag ..

(14,040 posts)Virginia is sorta like Pennsylvania--blue on either side (end in VA's case) and Kentucky in the middle (sorry Kentuckians).
Also heard on MSNBC, that Fairfax Co. needs huge Dem turnout too.

(2,116 posts)the lines were longer than I can remember. I live in Virginia Beach, and voted at a local Middle School. I waited an hour to vote and that was in the middle of the afternoon at about 3:15pm. My husband waited 90 minutes this morning on the way to work and the line snaked out into the parking lot. My hope is that we win Virginia, Colorado and Iowa, so that we can counter the BS in Ohio and Florida.

(1,782 posts)Where I vote (an elementary school) the line was very, very long this morning but it moved fast. When I got to the gym, where the voting takes place, I was given a choice: machines to the left, paper ballots to the right. The line for machines was about 30 people deep; there was no line for paper.
What were these people thinking, waiting in line to cast a vote that could easily be flipped?
I went to work and complained to my supervisor, who is progressive in her values but not immersed in politics. She explained that she always makes sure she votes on a computer, because someone could mess with a paper ballot! I responded by e-mailing her links to three pieces by Michael Collins detailing the problems with electronic voting machines.
We got to educate people about the hazards of voting on computers.
And I am grateful that Virginia provides the option of paper ballots.
