Bernie Sanders Warns Hillary Clinton on Running Mate Pick
by JORDAN FRASIER
SHARE
Senator Bernie Sanders doubled down on his warning to democratic rival Hillary Clinton that her pick for running mate will be critical to winning over his supporters going into the general election during an interview to air Sunday on "Meet the Press."....
The Vermont senator was adamant that Clinton pick a hardline progressive for vice president if she successfully secures the Democratic nomination for president. This could help her appeal to the supporters who have flocked to Sanders' campaign during the primary.

(365 posts)In MA, it would be a very short GOP seat. Don't they have to call a special election pretty quick? if Deval Patrick ran he would be a lock (no Scott Brown repeats),

But don't forget to vote for Hillary or you may get the Anti-Christ elected.
Just take us out of mothballs as needed and then put away again.
Believe me--the Democrats worst nightmare will be an exodus of progressives. And frankly, it's our party too. Why should we sit down and shut up or just...get out of the way.

(1,078 posts)My biggest concern with that though. Hillary won't pick someone with the potential to be more popular than her. Sadly I think that would rule out Elizabeth Warren.
While I think she'd be the perfect running mate in the eyes of many. I doubt Hillary is one of them.

(114,904 posts)Chuck Todd used that word. The shit stain reporter who wrote the article and completely mischaracterized what Bernie said, used it.
There is video at the link though I doubt a solitary Hillary fan will have the integrity to watch it and admit he didn't warn or threaten in any way.
My contempt grows stronger with every passing day.

But, and I can't believe I'm saying this, I'm agreeing with your summary of the interview and how the message got totally lost in translation in a short "news" piece.
I'm sure you've been burned by misleading HeadLines. We all have. You could have worded your post with just a teaspoon or two less Drama.

"That means having a candidate who can excite working families, excite young people, bring them into the political process, create a large voter turnout," Sanders told Chuck Todd.
The Vermont senator was adamant that Clinton pick a hardline progressive for vice president if she successfully secures the Democratic nomination for president. This could help her appeal to the supporters who have flocked to Sanders' campaign during the primary.
Asked whether Virginia senator Tim Kaine, who's rumored to be on Clinton's short list, is the kind of running mate he's recommending, Sanders said, "I really like him very much," but declined any further speculation.

(9,600 posts)Plus Hillary needs to incorporate a portion of Bernie's agenda into her campaign to move herself forward. Having Bernie as VP will strengthen her as a candidate.
HassleCat
(6,409 posts)If she follows the Third Way pattern of the last 30 years, she will choose a southerner who is tough on crime, opposes abortion, wants to execute more criminals, etc. My guess is she feels she has moved as far left as she needs to, and is looking to bolster her numbers among conservative Democrats, who may be feeling left out by all the attention lavished on Sanders and Warren and progressive issues, the Black Lives Matter thing, etc. Conventional wisdom says there aren't many progressives, at least nt nearly as many votes there as among conservative white Democrats.
UCmeNdc
(9,600 posts)But without Bernie she will be viewed as a center right politician and possible lose the left. That can be a huge problem for her in the general election. Bernie Sanders has name recognition and a huge following. He will represent the left wing of the democratic party perfectly. Hillary represents the center right interests already.
HassleCat
(6,409 posts)Compared to Trump, Clinton is very far left, or at least seen as being very far left. That's like saying, compared to the south pole, anyplace else is warm. The pattern of our party over the last thirty years suggests she will be under pressure to take the progressive vote as a given, and find some way to appeal to Reagan Democrats. We'll see what happens.

"I really like him very much," (when asked about Tim Kaine.)
Is anyone offended by what Sanders actually said, or just the sensationalistic headline?

Bernie deserves huge concessions, and should be able to reshape the party at this point, its the right thing to do. Bernie is the only one who can do it too. He should be appointed in charge of the DNC, for starters.

(660 posts)Making public demands on a nominee makes it less likely that the nominee will do what is requested. Sanders knows that. I don't know why he's making public demands. He is beginning to mystify me.

(9,951 posts)...first, why should he be warning Hillary about her choice. She gets to pick.
...second, is Bernie conceding? Doesn't he think he's going to pick the VP?

(35,619 posts)He didn't use the word "warn;" the headline writer did.
The sensationalistic headline will get more clicks than "Sanders Describes Good Qualites in a VP" would have gotten.
