Be Like Bernie: Sanders Looks To Spread His Political Wealth

The political revolution that Bernie Sanders began may still be felt at the ballot box this November even if he's not the Democratic nominee for president.

The Vermont senator is beginning to expand his political network by helping upstart progressive congressional candidates and state legislators, lending his fundraising prowess and national fame to boost their bids.

And win or lose for the White House hopeful, Sanders's candidacy has given them a prominent national messenger and new energy they hope will trickle down-ballot in primaries and the general election.

"Bernie Sanders is really building this political revolution all the way up and down the ballot," said Matt Blizek, MoveOn.org's electoral field director. "His entire campaign, the mantra has been 'not me, us.'"

(snip)

"Bernie believes that the path toward bold change requires leaders to take back control of state capitols around the country and ensure fair redistricting in 2020," Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver wrote in a release announcing the endorsements. "The leaders we're raising money for today are the members of Congress, senators and presidential candidates of tomorrow."

(snip)

Progressive leaders particularly praised Sanders's attention to state-level races, something often overlooked in national politics but are contests that can prove especially critical when it comes to redistricting — which was detrimental to Democrats after their massive 2010 losses.

"He's bringing this national attention to down-ballot races and the importance of state legislative races. He's saying that it isn't just about the presidency," Taylor said.

Are we talking about the same Bernie? This is the guy who didn't even know that a United States Senate candidate in Pennsylvania had publicly endorsed him. You can say a lot of things about Bernie, but his attention on lower level races is not a selling point.

Unlike Hillary, he raised most of his money from people who could not necessarily afford to give both to him and his downballot choices. So before Hillary built such a big delegate lead, it made sense for him not to "share the wealth" that much. But now that it is unlikely he will be nominated unless something drastic happens, he is willing to focus more on the downballot races. I am glad to see him doing so.

what you're saying is that it's somehow positive that Bernie didn't give a flip about helping down-ballot Dems until he knew he was going to lose, at which point that's the only positive thing he can do with his campaign. Sounds awfully self-serving to me.

20. That's not what I am saying
Sat May 28, 2016, 01:55 PM
May 2016

I am saying that, like most politicians who raise money from small donors, he was reluctant to do a lot of fundraising for downballot candidates that might come at the expense of his own campaign. For example, between June and November 2008, while Obama did appeal to his larger donors who were maxed out to help Hillary pay off debt, he declined requests from the Clinton camp to send out an e-mail appeal to his small donors on her behalf. He did send out such an e-mail in late November or early December 2008, after the election.

Sure, it's self-serving, but it makes sense strategically, and I don't think there is anything wrong with it. If anything, I have more of a problem with Hillary locking up so many superdelegate endorsements before anyone could vote based in part on her past efforts to fund-raise for other candidates and keeping a list of who has and hasn't done her favors (this is well-documented).

Interestingly, I noticed that some of the candidates Bernie is helping are not even superdelegates. For example, Zephyr Teachout is not listed as a superdelegate for New York. Neither is Tim Canova, in Florida. The fact that Bernie is directing down-ballot efforts toward candidates who are not even superdelegates shows that he is less self-serving than most.

I'm sure there is a little more to vetting someone than just finding out if they consider them self a Berniecrat. So yes, I think his number of endorsements are just about right. And he's splitting his donations with them, which is a pretty strong statement.

in the Democratic Congressional Caucus and this while he was a Congressman from a small state.

During his first year in the House, Sanders often alienated allies and colleagues with his criticism of both political parties as working primarily on behalf of the wealthy. In 1991, Sanders co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a group of mostly liberal Democrats that Sanders chaired for its first eight years.[14]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Sanders

The Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) is the largest membership organization within the Democratic congressional caucus in the United States Congress with 71 members.[4] The CPC is a left-leaning organization that works to advance progressive and liberal issues and positions.[5][6][7]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congressional_Progressive_Caucus

His run for the Presidency and power of his message has now allowed him to greatly aid an increasing number of Progressive Candidates throughout the nation and he's not finished yet by a long shot.

Many if not most of them have even admitted they must spend much energy and most of their time raising money for their next election.

This usually means kowtowing to the wealthy and/or mega-corporations to fund them because running for election is expensive.

While they knew he spoke the truth it still bothered them just as an alcoholic or someone addicted to drugs is aggravated by people that tell them they have a problem.

17. Here's one interesting tidbit
Sat May 28, 2016, 01:36 PM

Often, politicians negotiate endorsements prior to announcing them. For example, I recall reading that Kerry and Obama met in December 2007 and Kerry decided he would endorse Obama, and they agreed that the Obama campaign would pick the right time to roll the endorsement out to have maximum impact (he ended up choosing the day after he lost the New Hampshire primary).

It appears Bernie doesn't do endorsements that way:

Canova, a law professor who's challenging Wasserman Schultz in her Southern Florida district, was driving by himself to a campaign event when his phone started buzzing last Saturday. A staffer told him they had gotten a call from a CNN producer that Sanders had just endorsed him in an interview with Jake Tapper set to air Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union." The next phone call was from that producer asking for a reaction.

In other words, Canova had no idea Bernie was going to endorse him. I think that's pretty cool.

It has been going on for awhile, so don't pay attention to the uninformed (or worse) Hill Folk upthread.

Expats For Bernie has compiled this list of 191 candidates who are running with Bernie for Federal and State Senate and Fed and State Congress.

Mind you, this list is several months old, so it's not complete and there may have been changes. Check the Expats for Sanders page on Facebook for updates.
