Former President Jimmy Carter announced support for NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden this week, saying that his uncovering of the agency’s massive surveillance programs had proven “beneficial.”

Speaking at a closed-door event in Atlanta covered by German newspaper Der Spiegel, Carter also criticized the NSA’s domestic spying as damaging to the core of the nation’s principles.

“America does not have a functioning democracy at this point in time,” Carter said, according to a translation by Inquisitr.

Former President Jimmy Carter on the sad state of affairs when it comes to our campaign finance laws, and the fact that the United States has become an oligarchy: Why Jimmy Carter Thinks The United States Isn’t A Real Democracy Anymore:

Former President Jimmy Carter believes the United States’ campaign finance system is so broken that the country is no longer a functional democracy. Appearing on the Thom Hartmann show this week, Carter said that “unlimited political bribery” is “the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.” He said the same problems are present in elections for “U.S. senators and congress members.”

Carter’s comments mirror the conclusions of a Princeton University study released last year. Author Martin Gilens found that “ordinary citizens have virtually no influence over what their government does in the United States.” Meanwhile, “economic elites and interest groups, especially those representing business, have a substantial degree of influence.”

I remember it well because it's when I first started realizing we have a lot of Reagan Democrats in our party.

He has lived longer post Presidency than any President in U.S. History. He passed Herbert Hoover for that distinction in September, 2012.

While his last reported checkup was good, I doubt he is better than 50-50 to live to see the next President inaugurated. Life expectancy for a man of his age without cancer is only 2-3 years.
