Heads Up! NY Mayor De Blasio Offers 20 Mil to Reform BOE Following Voting "Snafus" on Primary Day

De Blasio comes up with a plan – and $20 million – to reform ‘outdated’ Board of Elections

Calling New York City’s Board of Elections (BOE) “outdated,” Mayor Bill de Blasio rolled out a list of proposed reforms on Monday. The action follows reports of polling site chaos and widespread voter disenfranchisement during last week’s Primary Election.

The mayor also announced that he will make $20 million available to carry out the reforms – but only if the BOE signs a binding agreement by June 1 to implement them.

De Blasio’s proposals include hiring an outside operations consultant, empaneling a blue-ribbon commission to “identify failures,” improving poll worker training, and providing new email and text notifications for voters.
------------

“The Board of Elections is an outdated organization in dire need of modernization – and we need to make these changes now. We cannot allow a single voter to be disenfranchised because of the Board of Elections’ outdated operations,” de Blasio said in a statement.

More than 125,000 Brooklyn residents were left off the voters registration list this year, according to NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer. Stringer, who announced last Tuesday an audit of BOE’s operations and management, cited reports of closed polling sites, faulty ballot scanners, misleading voting site notifications and other voting irregularities.

“It is clear that we have a broken voting system in New York City,” Stringer said on Monday. “What we need is state legislation to reform the Board of Elections and install a professional, non-partisan board of directors.”

------------

"Wide-spread voter disenfranchisement like we saw last week is unacceptable,” City Councilmember Brad Lander said in a statement. Lander said that the reforms would “create a Board of Elections New Yorkers can trust again.”

The reforms were backed by representatives of a number of groups, including Common Cause/NY, the New York Public Interest Research Group and the New York Immigration Coalition.

1. The Board of Elections needs to be revamped.

Individuals are chosen through party patronage.

10. Were you here in the days of the "Stolen Election 2000?"

You joined in 2003 but might have seen the battles here over the Voting Machines and the efforts so many of us made to get involved and try to get those machines out and "Verified Paper, Countable Ballets" to be the norm.

We made some progress in some states and had a movement going but it sort of got bogged down in battles over Bev Harris and others who saw Reform a different way.

All these years later and we see that nothing much has been done. I think this election (thank the Godess that Bernie ran) is going back over what wasn't finished no matter how much effort we made, back then and the improvements that didn't continue once Obama won the election. I think everyone felt that if Obama won (against all odds) that the machines all worked great and "nothing to see there...just move along."

Bernie's Candidacy is exposing much of what needed a "Revisit," to expose the ROT in our Election System.

12. Exactly! Like revisiting "The Twilight Zone!"

What's Old is New Again with some of the same characters. Except, in those days, they were called "Freepers" from that website "Free Republic."

Maybe it IS the Same Ones from "Freeperville"...but, they suddenly decided become Democrats for THIS particular Election.

4. Next time they can correct the flaws, and then it can become outdated again!!

But, it's certainly not corrupt.

9. Article at the link says it will take a year for Commission to propose changes....

So......too late for 2016.

Still...at least they recognize that there were Big Problems with Voter Disenfranchisment and hopefully the Provisional Ballets will be examined and their Voting Machines and Website Voting Verification for Party Affiliation will updated in the interim.
