AP poll: Majority harbor prejudice against blacks

Oct. 27

WASHINGTON (AP) — Racial attitudes have not improved in the four years since the United States elected its first black president, an Associated Press poll finds, as a slight majority of Americans now express prejudice toward blacks whether they recognize those feelings or not.

Those views could cost President Barack Obama votes as he tries for re-election, the survey found, though the effects are mitigated by some Americans' more favorable views of blacks.

Racial prejudice has increased slightly since 2008 whether those feelings were measured using questions that explicitly asked respondents about racist attitudes, or through an experimental test that measured implicit views toward race without asking questions about that topic directly.

In all, 51 percent of Americans now express explicit anti-black attitudes, compared with 48 percent in a similar 2008 survey. When measured by an implicit racial attitudes test, the number of Americans with anti-black sentiments jumped to 56 percent, up from 49 percent during the last presidential election. In both tests, the share of Americans expressing pro-black attitudes fell.

To use a racially originated colloquialism.

In "white" English, it's "No shit!" If we could scrub the weaselly dog whistles from Faux Noise, it might improve things.

They all bring on guests that are known to be racist, how many times has CNN or MSNBC had John Sununu and Newt Gingrich on. Controversy brings them in cash, screw the consequences to our society.

I'm betting there are a lot of sexists out there, too--and plenty of 'em are female people...I see them in the ads for these crazed Republicans, looking into the camera and saying a batshit crazy asshole "supports" women. I wonder what planet they're from!

What is wrong with people? They just seem to have no damn common sense, many of them...

No wonder the rMoney team is dogwhistling, they probably ran this sort of poll a month or more ago--most of the insults have been directed at black people, when will we start hearing the Speedy Gonzales and "Mañana, mañana" insults directed at Hispanics? Or are they afraid of alienating that small subset of Cubans in FL?

We all need to work our asses off to GOTV. It's going to be another case of "work twice as hard to get half the credit."

I have been alienated from so many "friends" and relatives because of the emergent racism after Obama was elected. I never thought some of these people thought this way and I am somewhat ashamed I never picked up on it beforehand. Doesn't reflect well on my ability to read people.

Every Latino, every African American should know a lot of white Americans don't like them, don't respect them, and don't want anything to do with them, and most but certainly not all of them are Republicans.

55% (D). Didn't see a number for (I).

That's using "implicit measures". The increase is within the range of error.

But they used a lot of methods that have a fairly high degree of error. When they calculated error, they only looked at calculated sampling error.

Some of the methods they used are standard but not without problems. Take showing pictures and then applying things like "hardworking" or "lazy" to the anonymous faces shown. Are they judging real people or media stereotypes? The individual that comes to mind or strangers? Is there a difference?

In one USC study looking at racism you could watch the researchers tie themselves up into knots. They used fMRI scans to assess whites' reaction to the faces of black versus white youth. The whites were clearly racist against black--they showed high levels of fear for pictures of young black males but not young white males. The assumption was that they associated young black males with gangs, violence, drugs, all kinds of bad, nasty things. Before publication somebody said they needed a control--you know, to make it go from anecdote to science--and so they ran the same experiment with black adults.

And they got the same results. The researchers had to come up with some way of saying the whites were racist but the blacks weren't. Media influence, crime rates in different neighborhoods, etc., etc. In the end they found a way to make their conclusion not impossible, but they had to work awfully hard to justify their first conclusion.

1) On the explicit racism scale Republicans scored twice as high.
2) No survey can capture the true attitude of a person if he or she wishes to conceal it and is reasonably intelligent about it. I had a psychology professor who bragged he could game the MM PI to put himself into whatever category he wanted.

The MMPI is a hard test to skew, I'm told. There are supposedly built-in corrective factors to guard against lying. I took it years ago, and the questions were so vague and odd (I would like to be a park ranger. T/F) that I wouldn't know what they were trying to test for.

without explaining who they polled? Does that include African Americans? Ridiculous.

Another puff piece trying to help the Mittwit. Even if true, it may not affect the President - there are always "exceptions." Note they had to go out of their way to say it might hurt the President's re-election. They were afraid the reader might not figure that one out for themselves.

How ridiculous is this? The "entertainment" industry continues to portray blacks in the worst possible light. As does the news media. And Fox News.. well... that's their entire schtick.

But it still boggles the mind that 51% of Americans dislike people because of their race.

ETA: Of course look at the Trayvon Martin case, and how that was played out by media observers, the media, and the general public. Read the comments surrounding the case on any news site. The media and entertainment industry have done a "great" job of creating this insane fear in America of young black males. Yes, it's true that the statistics are NOT good for young black males in America as far as their likelihood of going to jail or being killed, but the fear and sensationalism around that is way out of proportion to real life. Then you have the Reagan "welfare queen" BS. Americans have been groomed to hate, that's the only way that the republicans can get what they want, thru fear and ignorance.
