By late summer 2010, the national Democratic leadership had given up on winning the midterms.

I know this because I was at a local Democratic meeting where our National Committeewoman for Alaska reported to us that the party itself had already concluded that the midterms were unwinnable.

If we were hearing that in Alaska, it was being repeated all over the place.

It was that kind of talk from the party itself that caused the massive decline in turnout.

You can't expect people to bother voting when the national leadership itself sends the message that voting is pointless.

It was the party that caused the losses that year, not the millennials.
