2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPOLL: If we could vote for Obama again...
If they repealed the term limits and Obama could run for a third term, would you prefer that over the candidate you support now, or would you stick by your current candidate?
Hopefully this poll will be a little break from the regularly scheduled fighting on here.

Hillary supporter here.

(68,868 posts)he can win general elections. Neither Clinton nor Sanders has proven that.

(12,007 posts)Were you for Obama over Clinton in 2008, out of curiosity?
BTW, thank you for being one of the more thoughtful and realistic Clinton supporters today.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)And the way Clinton ran and managed her campaign showed, quite frankly, that she was the one not ready for the job of leading the party and the country.
I think she's much more ready now. She learned some hard lessons, but she did learn.

(12,007 posts)There are things I don't like about her, but I think she definitely brings some advantages to the table. I am fighting for Bernie because I think he is a good man and people like him don't get even this far very often. But I don't hate Hillary and I might have even supported her if Bernie were not running.

(68,868 posts)will look forward to putting the primary behind us and taking it to the real bad guys. Trump or Cruz, both repulsive.

(898 posts)He's a corporatist at heart. Still, infinitely better than any R and at least he has class. If it were a choice between Obama and Clinton I'd ALWAYS pick Obama, at least he has a soul.

(11,945 posts)I like Obama and understand what he has been up against. He may have compromised, but he is not an innately evil, corrupt person. Not by any means.
So of course I would vote for Obama over Hillary.
BUT
1) Hillary is NOT and will never be, Obama redux. She is entirely different with different values and motivations and anyone with an ounce of perception and insight should be able to see it. If you can't see it then you should find someone who can and let them guide you from here on out.
Certainly Obama knows it.
2) Now that Obama has straightened out some of Bush's messes, we need to finish the job.
Only Bernie has the strength of character and the will of heart to do it.

(12,007 posts)Say the primaries play out, neither candidate gets a majority, the convention deadlocks, the 22nd Amendment gets repealed, and people want to nominate Obama again. Crazy, I know. I was just curious whether people prefer their current candidates over Obama or not.

(7,446 posts)I can't negate cause and effect and give full reign to my wishes. Even hypotheticals exist in a hypothetical universe, not in a hypothetical vacuum.
I would be torn, as I supported Hillary through the 08 primary, but enthusiastically Barack since he won the nomination. I was excited voting for Barack, as I have been voting for Hillary. I wan't her to be President. That doesn't mean I don't want Barack to be President.

(50,793 posts)The past couple of days I've been thinking about age. (Disclaimer: I'm old.) It seems the job in question is more suitable for someone of Obama's age. Both Hillary and Bernie are smart enough and qualified enough, but recently I've become more aware of the quirky little things that seem to happen to an older mind. And the energy thing. They're both putting on a good show, but it's got to be just a show. No matter how hard you try to stay in shape, the vigor of youth is not there. It's a shame the field was cleared for Hillary. It discouraged the 40 and 50-somethings from even considering a run. (Okay, now you can pile on with the "ageism" remarks.)

(2,074 posts)I won't necessarily always agree with her, but I know that she is smart and capable and understands how government works. I think she's going to surprise a lot of her detractors.
That said, I was an Obama supporter in 2008 and will always be. Yes, if he could run again, I would support him. I think he is absolutely always the smartest person in the room, and I think he and his family are very classy. I don't necessarily always like every decision he makes, but I know he's been up against a bunch of obstructionist lunatics, and I generally trust his instincts.
Bernie I would only vote for if I had no choice. I like him fine enough, but I think he's not enough of a team player to get anything done, and I'm not very comfortable with the anger I see in him.
The idea of Trump or Cruz in the White House would pretty much make we want to vote for anyone on the Dem ticket. Those two scare the living daylights out of me. The idea of one of them following Obama's presidency makes me want to vomit.

(3,297 posts)I deeply prefer Obama over Clinton, and significantly over Sanders. There's a lot I am deeply disappointed with Obama over, but there's more where I think he's done a fantastic job in the face of a very broken system.
