46. A "hail Mary pass" is a football term.

It means a last ditch effort with the clock running out and the team behind in the score. The only thing that can pull out a win is for the quarterback to throw a long pass into the end zone and pray his receiver catches the ball among all the defenders and wins the game — thus, the "hail Mary" reference.

The chances of it happening are very low.

Some see Sanders' Vatican trip as a "hail Mary" attempt at winning the New York primary as time is running out and he's behind.

but that's not really why they're using it here. It's more that they think it's cute using Hail Mary because it's the Vatican/Pope.

It's pretty close to Catholic bashing if you ask me.

109. From that link it's not clear what you mean.

If you're talking about the icon that a poster used that depicts Sanders with a halo, that has nothing to do with someone using the term "hail Mary".

That term is in pretty common usage outside of football and politics, and has nothing to do with Catholic bashing.

It's just a descriptive term for, like I said, a last ditch effort.

Issues that wouldn't even be in the forefront if he wasn't running for president. No one on either side of the aisle would be talking about income inequality if he hadn't stepped up. 63. Does he want to be president or preach on a world stage about great issues?

IMO it's telling of his decision making process — either go all in and campaign 24/7 in the last 3 days before the most important primary to date, one where he's behind and his efforts could go a long way in narrowing Clinton's delegate lead, or leave his campaign and go out of the country and "speak on the international stage about the greatest issues of the world".

Hah! That's way past being a no-brainer.

The greatest issue is the presidency of the United States if you've invested all that time and money and supporters' work and effort. Why bother then with all these primaries and caucuses for the last several months if something is MORE important than that?

If so, we don't need Bernie Sander in the White House.

That trip should not have even been considered because of the time it took out of the campaign.

20. lol,he didn't get a note handed to him

Pope Francis has apologized that he couldn’t personally greet participants of a Vatican conference where Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders spoke.

Bishop Marcello Sanchez Sorondo read aloud the hand-written note of apology from the pope right before Sanders took the floor Friday.

In it, Francis said he had hoped to swing by the conference, located in a villa deep in the Vatican gardens, later Friday evening. But he said couldn’t pull it off because he was busy preparing for his upcoming trip to Greece on Saturday.

Francis asked Sanchez to “greet the speakers and participants, requesting their understanding of this situation. I will keep them all in my prayers and good wishes, and send them my heartfelt thanks for their participation.”

66. The Pope's note, addressed to the whole Conference, explained that he HAD intended to visit them,

but that he was prevented from doing so at the last minute "because he had to get to bed to rest up for his trip to Greece tomorrow."

That's what was announced on MSNBC just now.

They also said that he was obliged to send the note, NOT because of the presence of the Bern, but because some notable and close Latin American friends of Pope Francis are there.

IOW, if the Bern hadn't barged his way in there, Pope Francis would've gone over to see his Spanish-speaking bros.

In diplomatic terminology, it is OBVIOUS that Pope Francis purposely stayed away to avoid the impropriety of the appearance of papal interference in US politics.

11. Its still in the air

Bernie Sanders is being peppered with questions from academics and ecclesiastics at the Vatican, giving the Democratic presidential hopeful a chance to expand on core campaign messages about the need to reform banking regulations, campaign finance rules and higher education.

After his initial speech Friday, Sanders was treated as something of the eminence grise of the United States, answering the questions of conference participants from around the globe.

Host Bishop Marcello Sanchez Sorondo kicked off the questioning, drawing out Sanders on his praise of Pope Francis and their shared condemnation of income inequality.

Sanders said: “We don’t choose to politicize the pope … But his spirit and courage and the fact, if I may say so here, that his words have gone way, way, way beyond the Catholic Church.”

The Jewish candidate called the situation of public education in America “beyond disgraceful” and denounced campaign finance regulations that allow the wealthy to buy their way into office.

He said: “Is that really democracy? My view it is not. It’s a move toward oligarchy.”

72. I am a Bernie voter. But I equally support Hillary if he loses. Here is how I look at it,

oh and thanks for the compliment, by the way.

Bernie Sanders is unique in American Politics. There simply are no others like him, and to compare Hillary or any opponent in the Democratic Party to him is not just unfair, but suicidal.

Sure, I want Bernie to win, but to then say if he loses I wont accept a very mainstream Democrat, is, again, suicidal.

I think the mainstream of the democratic party is way too far to the right, but I also think the GOP is insane.

Thanks again!

What are his talents? The other members are rich because they were already successful doctors, lawyers, etc prior to being elected. Bernie worked odd jobs prior and was unemployed prior to winning his first elected office.

this will work as well as Romney's trip to Europe in 2012, and Christie, Jindal, and Walker's trips to Europe (last year).

...when asked about this boondoggle, she looked her right in the eye, said "we get off the plane, go to the Vatican for the speech, then right back to the airport and fly home".

Now they're staying overnight!

Seems to be a pattern with her/them.

55. Sanders getting lots of attention and respect at the Vatican:

(AP)

Bernie Sanders is being peppered with questions from academics and ecclesiastics at the Vatican, giving the Democratic presidential hopeful a chance to expand on core campaign messages about the need to reform banking regulations, campaign finance rules and higher education.

After his initial speech Friday, Sanders was treated as something of the eminence grise of the United States, answering the questions of conference participants from around the globe.

58. He went there to send a message to the World re: economic justice, not to get narcissistic supply

via a meeting with the Pope as you erroneously assume. After all he is NOT Hillary.

Meanwhile Hillary is going to CA for two high-dollar fundraisers w/ the Clooneys (which is part and parcel of what Sanders and the Pope's message to the World is about ie: greed and money driving everything)

You are clueless as to the objective of his trip and proceed to criticize him that some other more self-serving objective (more befitting HRC than Sanders) wasn't met?

What a very interesting use of projection.

Narcissistic supply seems to drive Clinton and many of her supporters, and it really shows in posts like these. They delight in mean-spirited antagonistic attacks that supposedly serve only to humiliate or denigrate Sanders and his supporters. Like most narcissists, they are short-sighted in their objectives and viewing reality through a skewed perspective.

Read it at: https://berniesanders.com/urgency-moral-economy-reflections-anniversary-centesimus-annus/

I still have grave reservations about the Roman Catholic Church as a mechanism of societal change, given the paucity of their moral stance on so many issues involving individual freedoms, but Bernie's speech was just fine and free of political rhetoric, for the most part.

77. Frankly, I don't see what this Vatican speech has to do with

our primary race at all. It's really irrelevant to that. Good as it was, within its subject area, it has little to do with the challenges facing the next POTUS. I can only consider it to be a break from the campaign, probably a much-needed break. I'm sure he'll resume his attempt to get the Democratic nomination as soon as he returns to the US.

What's interesting to me today is how little interest there has been in the actual speech he gave. I've seen almost no commentary in the threads where the link to the planned speech is provided. At least on DU, it doesn't seem as though substance is as important as appearance when it comes to Bernie Sanders. I was interested to read what he planned to say. He is clearly a decent speaker. I wish the campaign was more focused on substance than appearances.

But, there it is. We treat presidential elections as entertainment rather than time to consider a crucial decision. I'm old, I guess, but that's never how I've looked at presidential elections. Much is at stake and they are always a binary choice in the end. I'm finding this primary period to be frustrating and alarmingly superficial, really. But I'm used to it, I guess.

112. Actually Bernie did have a private meeting with the Pope.

So yeah, I think it was the icing on the cake for Bernie...

ROME — U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders says he met privately with Pope Francis during his overnight trip here, his spokesman said.

The meeting took place at the papal residence early Saturday, according Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs.

A Vatican source said the meeting was not a chance encounter and had been planned.

The Sanders campaign had been vague about the senator's itinerary here following his address Friday to a Vatican conference. Francis left Rome later Saturday for Greece, where he is visiting migrants stuck on the island of Lesbos. The reticence about a Sanders meeting may be an attempt to avoid the perception that Francis is endorsing Sanders or otherwise involving himself in American politics.

Sanders was invited to address a Vatican seminar on income inequality and economic justice, and took an unusual break from the Democratic primary campaign trail to attend. He had said in a Washington Post interview last week that he admired Francis and hoped to meet him, but that nothing was set.

Sanders quotes Francis frequently in his address to the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, and told reporters afterward that the pope has had enormous influence in airing issues of wealth disparity and climate change.
