2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAt this point, Trump is running a proxy campaign for Bernie.
Both have the same message; anti-establishment, delegate rigging, etc. Trump may well know he can't win, but everything he's doing is helping push the Bernie message against Hillary, one of the most un-likable candidates in history.

(31,464 posts)I'm Bernie 100%. I know several Republicans who will vote for Bernie before Trump. Trump has very little chance of winning. Hillary is largely despised as the establishment candidate people want to be rid of. Trump and Bernie are both appealing to the millions of Americans who are sick of the same ol' same ol' which Hillary represents. Prove me wrong.

(36,063 posts)Trump announced mid-June last year. Mid-JUNE. Back when Sanders wasn't even credited with being as much as a legitimate long-shot.
Yet, at that point HRC faced a well known persistent, historical problem in US presidential voting post FDR. Only once since the imposition of the 2-term limit had a political party held the presidency for 3 consecutive terms (that one time was Reagan' VP, George H.W. Bush, running against the disasterous campaign of the "Last of the Northeast Liberals" Micheal Dukakis). It's been a fairly well established that Americans feel two terms is enough for any party.
How does one break what is an increasingly rigid tradition in US politics? Well it certainly helps if the opponents are divided against themselves.
And Trump has absolutely thrown the R's into disarray, fracturing all rules about intra-party decorum, traditional conservativism, right wing libertarian ideologies, and race-hatred by slinging red-meat to the anxious and angry Know-Nothing near neo-nazis on that party's farthest right fringes.
And who emerges from behind the curtain? T he Jedi master of 3rd Way politics Olbill Wan Kanobe who apparently did indeed encourage Trump to run http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2015/08/bill-clinton-called-donald-trump-before-presidential-run-2016.
Why? Just because OlBill thinks everyone with a dream to be world ceo should pursue it, even against the WH bid of his wife? I don't think it's that simple. Not by a long shot.
