It happened to an acquaintance of mine who decided that she wanted to compete men's gymnastics and an article was written about her efforts. The comments section was just utterly vile with people saying she was really a guy, or transgender and that she obviously lied about having twins because she wasn't born female and just on and on.

There was a good This American Life piece about a guy who set up a fake email to troll a woman author by pretending to be her dead dad.

All sorts of women who are active online get death and rape threats.

It's a much bigger issue than what either campaign is dealing with and started long before this election cycle.
