OK it seems that Bernie will be taking a charter to the Vatican

https://news.vice.com/article/bernie-sanders-vatican-invite-pope-wont-meet-with-him

The trip has also caused a small stir among pundits ahead of the April 19 New York primary, as Sanders will be forced to take a break from campaigning for a few days to fly to Rome and back. The campaign will board a charter immediately after a highly-anticipated Democratic debate in New York that Sanders had been pressuring Clinton to accept on April 14.

Is this an official campaign event?

He's going to have to be on that charter, immediately after the debate.

35. Nice!

I was going to say he was going to let the Vatican keep some of his families' art work the had "donated" to the church in the 1940's...but I like the pope and it would have been tasteless...I also liked the joke so I posted it in a round about way by saying I wasn't going to. But still love the pope, just not the darker history of the Vatican.

P.S. if my nazi art joke is offending anyone please do tell me I can nix it.

I love the artwork of the Vatican (the buildings themselves) but man do I hate a large amount of its history. The fact I wanted to pull this joke shows how much of a good job I think this pope is doing. Also it seems like there is also infighting in the church, I hope he stays in power for a while with all the stuff he is doing.

70. I'm a lapsed Catholic and I agree

No institutions have a pure history. I think Pope Frankie is starting the church on a long path toward reform but it's going to be a long road.

I hope I one day get to see the artwork in the Vatican and I hope any families of the Holocaust can get their heritage and wealth restored to them from all who stole it.

Did you see the reports from a year or so ago about the beautiful apartment in Paris, closed up from WWII until recently? It boggles my mind that it was there for so long and no one went in.

97. Did they make it in to a museum?

I would line up to see that, something about time-capsule places are so unique. I remember driving down old dirt roads in Arkansas that would lead you out by an old roadside store that looked like a depression age or older but still in full use. Not saying that they had used an old place they found and restored it, but everything about it was still old and in use, the electric poles, the doors, the chairs, the old gas pumps, everything had just refused to move forward in time. I heard the Vatican was built on some old pagan ruins, but I never got to see that, if it is excavated.

First, there is no connection between the Panama Papers and the Clintons or their Foundation, except in the fevered imagination of the Republicans and, sadly., some Bernie supporters. Secondly, your 'proof' consists of a reporting that the Clintons have established perfectly legal companies in - gasp - Delaware. That's pretty heady stuff, seeing as Delaware is the corporate capital of the United States. And, for the cherry on the cake, the articie you point to makes clear that nothing about this is illegal.

So, once again, where's the "corrupt behavior" I keep hearing about?

How so .. you are the one that brought up 'worth of speeches' ... You think paying someone $250K for the same speech they could supposedly get for free at a campaign stump speech, or watching CNN makes sense, and there's no "added value" to the ones she gives in private to Wall St?

Is "Cut it out" copyrighted, or a trademark? Will I be getting a bill for $250K for using 'cut it out' in my post?

The Walmart Heiress that gave the Clintons a "massive" donation
Bill Clinton's sex life
How Michelle Obama "looks down" on Hillary Clinton
Trying desperately to tie the Clintons to the Panama Papers
Hillary's student loan debt at Yale
Hillary's "subway gaffe"
How Clinton wasn't given time to speak at the conference involving global poverty

California with 99.3% of the total votes..." but long before that point all but the most delusional will tuck in their sails and (hopefully) start thinking about the GE. There will of course be the few - the ones who post here on DU saying "If I can't vote for Bernie, I won't vote for anybody", the 'I'll take my ball and go homers' plus the remaining few who believe that, against all odds (and the laws of mathematics) that Bernie will prevail in spite of everything and, with his nomination (and of course eventual landslide victory over the Republican candidate) the Lion will lie down with the Lamb, the rich will come to their senses and agree to be taxed at 80 or 90% and social justice will fall over the land like a soft mist. For them, the Perfect is the enemy of the Good and they will probably vote for Jill Stein.

93. Perhaps you forgot which thread you're in.

I'd love it if this campaign and the discussions here were entirely about substantive issues.

I had someone on the HRC side say yesterday "oh Sanders people don't want to talk about issues" so I said "great, lets talk about specific issues, awesome! Like...." and they said, verbaitm "---I'm not here to discuss specific issues".

Some people have a little .....trouble deviating from the script, I've noticed.

If this wasn't for his own glorification, he wouldn't have tried to sell it as a invitation from the pope on national TV.

if he did, but he doesnt roll that way.

When he does something it is to put a light on his issue of income inequality here and around the world.

He may have blown it by doing this now as to timing for his campaign, but Bernie Sanders does not do anything for personal profit.

Ever.

Oh, unless you count the few thousand dollars he makes each year with his nearly nothing investments.

That's not true, and he knew that it wasn't true when he said "yes." Also, the whole reason that the host of the View thought that he had been invited by the pope is because someone from the Bernie camp falsely told them that.

Who is paying for the flight for Hillary (and Bill?) the two High Donor George Clooney events at his Mansion out in California this weekend, while Bernie is in Rome giving a talk on "Money and Morality" linking up with other like-minded people "Working for Change."

Bernie flew Coach until he got SS Protection, recently. Trump has his own plane and Hillary has always used Chartered private jets.

of his average rally audience. However, since campaign funds can't be used, maybe he'd have to set up a Go Fund Me campaign. Or maybe he'll just pay for it himself, since we all know he makes millions giving speeches to major financial corporations. Or maybe the Vatican agency that invited him will pick up the tab. Or maybe it's something we don't really need to concern ourselves with.

As a bishop, he does. But given that the Academy is autonomous, and that is made clear in their bylaws which were created by JP2, there is no nexus when it comes to his responsibilities at the Pontifical Academy.

Cute little insult at the end of your commentary--you're apparently quite proud of your lack of understanding of these rather simple issues, and want everyone to know, perhaps? Well, if they were unclear before, they aren't now!!!

112. We know all about the Hillary Clinton Slush errrr... Victory Fund.

How Hillary Clinton Bought the Loyalty of 33 State Democratic Parties

<snip>

The idea was to increase how much one could personally donate to Hillary by taking advantage of the Supreme Court ruling 2014, McCutcheon v FEC, that knocked down a cap on aggregate limits as to how much a donor could give to a federal campaign in a year. It thus eliminated the ceiling on amounts spent by a single donor to a presidential candidate.

In other words, a single donor, by giving $10,000 a year to each signatory state could legally give an extra $330,000 a year for two years to the Hillary Victory Fund. For each donor, this raised their individual legal cap on the Presidential campaign to $660,000 if given in both 2015 and 2016. And to one million, three hundred and 20 thousand dollars if an equal amount were also donated in their spouseís name.

From these large amounts of money being transferred from state coffers to the Hillary Victory Fund in Washington, the Clinton campaign got the first $2,700, the DNC was to get the next $33,400, and the remainder was to be split among the 33 signatory states. With this scheme, the Hillary Victory Fund raised over $26 million for the Clinton Campaign by the end of 2015.

The money was either transferred to the Hillary for America or Forward Hillary PACs and spent directly on the Hillary Clinton Campaign, often paying the salaries and expenses within those groups, or it was moved into the DNC or another Clinton PAC. Some of it was spent towards managing the Hillary merchandise store, where you can buy Hillary T shirts and hats and buttons.

"76 percent of the Vermont senatorís donations were $200 or less, amounting to just under $10.5 million of the $13.7 his campaign raised through the end of June.
The $15.2 million comes from a transfer of $1.5 million from his Senate campaign committee.

http://www.politico.com/story/2015/07/bernie-sanders-campaign-finance-fec-15-million-2016-120164

There were several stories and campaign announcements regarding the amount that matches the report:
http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/02/politics/bernie-sanders-fundraising/

Campaign Finance Institute has two charts that support the reported numbers:
Here: http://www.cfinst.org/pdf/federal/president/2016/Table1_Rec-Cash.pdf

And here:
http://www.cfinst.org/pdf/federal/president/2016/Table2_Individual%20Donors.pdf

So nothing odd. Nothing that has not been in print for almost a year.
At the end of the day, nothing more "mysterious" but a staffer making a mistake in the paperwork.

83. That shouldn't be surprising since he has Secret Service protection

He was never flying commercial. With the debate ending at 11pm, he should be able to take off by midnight landing in Rome around 2:30pm - 3pm. Tight squeeze to get to the Vatican, but I'm sure he'll be accommodated if he arrives a little late. I wonder if he's staying through the rest of the event on 16 April.

85. Charters usually depart from Teterboro.

Lots faster than dealing with LGA or JFK.

102. It's put to rest already.

There is no issue here. There never has been.

It's not like you have any reason to be THIS obsessed with stopping Bernie.

If your candidate is really that much better, she'll win on the merits.

You don't need to stoop to this.

108. I'm sure he is doing whatever he is supposed to be doing.

Since Clintonites aren't giving to his campaign, why are they so concerned? Has anyone asked Hillary how she is getting to George!s house for the glitzy fundraiser!

Who cares? I don't care how Hill gets around. Why the obsession with Bernie's transport. Seems kind of creepy for people to spend so much time thinking about someone they profess has no chance at the Presidency.

Is there any area of his daily like that you haven't taken a fine tooth comb to?

118. You should contact Bernie's campaign and ask them if it's an official event.

But, that isn't really what you are concerned about because if it was you would have already done it and had the answer to report.

He's going to the Vatican to speak. The fucking liar isn't.

Further questions? Good.

149. You've all been previously obsessed with Sanders being a secret millionaire, so

I imagine he'll be footing the bill himself. Maybe, rather than direct your question to a bunch of strangers on a political forum who are unlikely to have access to Bernie's checkbook, you should email the Sanders campaign and ask them if this is that huge a concern in your life.

151. I feel this trip is important. Charter necessary? Go for it.

The anti-Bernie supporters will find some stupid reason to make political hay out of a non-issue.

I hope his trip goes well. We need to support any endeavors that may help all of us to understand the position of others. Whatever Bernie learns, however he spreads his message is a good thing for anyone.

PS, I'm not Catholic, in fact, I don't profess to any religion but respect the Pope and the office of the Vatican.

152. I'm glad Bernie has this opportunity

to speak to other world leaders on the topic of income inequality. It clearly is a topic that is very near and dear to him. Maybe the sharing of ideas with other world leaders will help pave a path forward to a world where the top 1% does not control 50% of the world's wealth.
