Not long after, Monsignor Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences stepped in to dispute Archer’s statements. “I deny that. It was not that way," Sánchez Sorondo told Reuters. “This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus.”

Sánchez Sorondo later toned down his initial comments telling CNN the invitation should not be seen as an endorsement of the senator’s nomination. “It does not signify any support of the campaign," Sánchez Sorondo said. "We want to establish a dialogue between North America and South America so we thought to invite a [U.S.] politician. The president of Bolivia will also be there. Perhaps the others [candidates] would have been interested but they did not request to come."

He also confirmed to CNN that Sanders had reached out to the Vatican first. “He has expressed an interest many times in the Pope's encyclical and it's clear that he has an interest in studying it,” Sánchez Sorondo said. “It might have that effect, but we are not looking to support the campaign."

in global poverty and I'm glad he has reached out to the Vatican. That doesn't mean he begged for an invite or any other nonsense being spewed.

After all the Clintons invited the Pope to attend their Global Initiative and she didn't get an invitation. Doesn't that mean she reached out to them "first" too!

Nothing in the Bishop's statement (especially if you actually read the statement rather than the Daily Beast) says that the reason that Sanders was invited is because he asked. I'm quite sure many people express interest. Few are chosen.

But thanks for playing "How Can I Turn An Honor Into A Fail". There's a consolation prize with your name on it!

Let's see. Sharing ideas and discussion on global poverty - BAD because you only get to talk for 10 minutes and then people go on coffee break. Charging your potential voters thousands of dollars for a chance to hear something not drowned out by a wind machine - GOOD.

I don't know - I've done many presentations to many people in my business - and let me tell you 10 minutes is a lot. I think it's fabulous that Bernie was even afforded this much time in a conference that already had an agenda put in place. And the idea that he gets to continue discussion with deep thinkers on important issues throughout the day - well, it's really a stretch to make this a bad thing. But to those with little curiosity about important issues, nothing positive to say about their own candidate and no scandal to hang their snideness on -- I guess it's a bad thing.

It's a sad sad situation!

For her entire 12 year career as politician who listens more to bankers than the people she dehumanized 20 years earlier, pushing millions of peopel into poverty and taking away their education sort of disqualifies one to be invited to a fora that talks about global poverty.
That person who pushes for bombing people rather than feeding them is another disqualifier.

Unless it's for confession of being a part of the problem off course.
