Sanders was invited attend the Vatican conference

And marketing materials about the event from the Vatican feature Sanders as a speaker at the event.
He is the only American political figure in attendance. Please show some respect and remember the world is watching.

Here is the text of the press release from the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences:

We're delighted to host this conference to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Centesimus Annus, bringing together world leaders, including US Senator Sanders, Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, Bolivian President Evo Morales, Academicians of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences such as its President Margaret Archer, and leading scholars such as Professor Daniel Finn, Professor Jeffrey Sachs etc., to examine and discuss changes in politics, economics, and culture in the world these last 25 years in the light of Pope Francis' new encyclical Laudato si'. Our intention is socio-political in the highest sense of the term, because according to art. 1 of our Statutes, the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences was established by the Holy Father John Paul II on 1 January 1994 with the aim of promoting the study and progress of the social sciences, primarily economics, sociology, law and political science.
Title I - Constitution and Aims of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences
Art. 1
The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences was established by the Holy Father John Paul II on 1 January 1994 (AAS 86 , 213), with the aim of promoting the study and progress of the social sciences, primarily economics, sociology, law and political science. The Academy, through an appropriate dialogue, thus offers the Church the elements which she can use in the development of her social doctrine, and reflects on the application of that doctrine in contemporary society. The Academy, which is autonomous, maintains a close relationship with the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.

... Bernie is listed as an "other participant", and no where in the programme is he listed as a speaker.

Do you have another link that contradicts that?

Story states:
"U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was invited to speak at an April 15 Vatican event by the Vatican, a senior papal official said on Friday, denying a report that Sanders had invited himself."

6. Not based on what I'm reading here at DU.

Some in both camps were reaching to believe one spun version over another.

Media exaggerated what Sanders told them and some from both camps jerked quickly to embrace the media's version, instead of sticking with Sanders' exact words.

12. I'm talking about the 'invited by the Pope' and 'Bernie lied, he was NOT invited by the Pope'

battles going on here.

Some in both camps got carried away with this story, and the early reporting by media wasn't accurate, which only leads to one version of the story fighting the other version of the story here at DU.

Bernie didn't lie - he never said the Pope invited him to meet.
