Bernie Sanders Campaign Manager Lies About Hillary to Deflect Gun Control Criticism

http://www.mediaite.com/online/bernie-sanders-campaign-manager-lies-about-hillary-to-deflect-gun-control-criticism/

by Tommy Christopher

Democratic presidential candidate and independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is getting all kinds of fallout from his interview with the New York Daily News editorial board, including harsh attacks from the paper over his support for a law that gave gun manufacturers immunity from lawsuits. On MSNBC Tuesday night, Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver tried to deflect that heat away from his candidate by misleading, obfuscating, and outright lying to Rachel Maddow:

This issue of guns certainly is an issue that the Secretary’s campaign likes to raise a lot, but the truth of the matter is she’s been all over the map on this over the years. Her current campaign takes money from the gun lobby. You know, a gun lobbyist actually ran a fundraiser for her in DC on the 21st of March. So it’s a little bit disingenuous again. It’s like Wall Street or the fossil fuel industry or what have you, they say one thing, but they’re taking money with the other hand.

Let’s just break that down. On Sanders’ support for the immunity provision, he has said over and over again that he doesn’t think gun manufacturers ought to be liable for legally-purchased guns, even during Monday’s interview. In that NYDN interview, Sanders was asked if he thinks that victims of crimes should be able to sue gun manufacturers, and he replied “No, I don’t.” He muddied the waters later in the interview, though, when he was asked if the Sandy Hook lawsuit is “baseless,” and he said “It’s not baseless. I wouldn’t use that word,” but added that “it’s a backdoor way” of achieving the goal of a legislative assault weapons ban.

As David Sirota reported Monday in the International Business Times, Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta is a co-host and the guest of honor at a fundraising lunch in the nation’s capital on March 21.

One of the other co-hosts is Jeff Forbes of the lobbying firm Forbes-Tate.

Forbes has represented the NRA since 2009 and as of the last quarter of 2015 was still registered to lobby for the organization. On his lobbying disclosure, Forbes wrote that he was signed up to lobby for “Issues related to 2nd Amendment rights, regulation and gun control, and tax and appropriations related to same; issues related to corporate tax reform.” [Update at 4:41 p.m. ET: Jennifer Baker, director of public affairs for the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, emails us to say that “Jeff Forbes is no longer an NRA consultant.”]

During the 2013 push for universal background checks, Forbes was one of a phalanx of Democratic Party lobbyists employed by the NRA to kill that legislation.

Forbes is an alumnus of the Bill Clinton administration
and later worked as chief of staff to former Montana Democratic Sen. Max Baucus.

Another co-host is Steve Elmendorf, who has lobbied for Goldman Sachs and the U.S.-Colombian Free Trade Agreement.

Here's the invite:

EVENT DETAILS
Join John Podesta, Campaign Chair, for a lunch hosted by Susan Brophy, Ann Castagnetti, David Castagnetti, Steve Elmendorf, Jeff Forbes, and Joel Johnson in Washington, D.C. RSVP to attend.

There above is the NRA lobbyist, Jeff Forbes, named as a host for the fundraiser.

Here's where he's worked
https://www.opensecrets.org/revolving/rev_summary.php?id=30850

and here's his firm who got $120,000 from the NRA in 2015
https://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/firmsum.php?id=D000032406

That firm, with his last name in it's name: Cauthen, Forbes & Williams, was the second highest paid lobbyist for the NRA in 2015:
https://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/clientlbs.php?id=D000000082&year=2015
and they've been doing it since 2009
https://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/clientlbs.php?id=D000000082&year=2009
(I've seen some stuff that may got back to 2004 with Forbes and the NRA and another lobbying firm - couldn't find it quickly)

So this is no overnight, passing NRA lobbyist - he's been one of their main lobbyists for a long time. Wide open in the public domain for many years, it's very difficult for politicians to not know it because he's been lobbying Washington politicians. Even more difficult to miss given he used to work for the Clinton White House.

Sorry Hillary supporters, the Sanders Campaign didn't lie one bit.

Hillary, or should we just call her what Barack did: Annie Oakley, used one of the top 2 NRA lobbyists to help raise money for her 2016 campaign on Mar 21, 2016.

She's such two faced liar. Is it any surprise? Not to me it isn't.

Let's see what the folks at Sandy Hook think about that.
