Culture wars may weaken youth support for Republicans

By Patricia Zengerle
FAIRFAX, Virginia | Fri Feb 24, 2012 5:45pm EST
(Reuters) - Colleen Wilson has all the makings of a foot soldier for whichever Republican becomes the nominee to oppose President Barack Obama in the November election.

The Virginia college student comes from a conservative family and describes herself as a Republican. She is an intern at the county Republican committee and paid her own way to attend the prominent Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington this month.

Her support should be a given for a Republican in Virginia, one of the closely contested "swing states" where the 2012 presidential election will likely be decided.

But it's not....

You and me both, lady. You and me both.

3 candidates want to take us back to the 1950s and 1 candidate wants to take us back to the 1850s. Gee, let me think... No, I don't want to go back in time.

I am betting that there will be a deeply cynical - "it doesn't matter so why bother voting" sentiment targeted to younger voters. Guessing it (the gop meme) will circulate through social media.

I just hope there aren't too many youthful cynics out there.

Idealism is a wonderful trait of the young. Some keep it all their lives, others lose it as soon as they join "the daily grind." It saddens me when young people get all jaded and cynical--if they aren't convinced they can change the world when they are young, who's gonna actually do the changing when they are middle aged?
