Pissed, Need to Vent
Something happened, I won't go into too much detail. Just need to vent.
I am disabled, chronic pain, incurable. Spend most of my time in bed. In order to keep my mind busy and less on pain, I read and I play games on my laptop or a borrowed iPad.
One of the games I play is an online game, text-based. It's nice to have the interaction. Today, one of the lines of discussion (there are chat 'channels' within the game) got on politics. I knew I should've stayed out when a lot of Romney supporters cropped up, but I related my situation and how it made me nervous about Romney.
Long story short, what had initially been relatively civil discourse went personal. I was told that, because I was managing to type on a game, I could work. Further, I was told that I was worsening the economic situation for the country.
What am I supposed to do, lay in bed and stare at the ceiling, thinking of nothing but my pain? Am I to suffer more than is necessary in return for benefits?
I should add that getting disability or SSI is not something you can just fraudulently waltz in on. I had to be rejected twice by paper pushers (fairly standard, I came to find out) before I went before a judge two years later. That was the wait time. I had the help of a lawyer and the backing of professors from a world class university medical system. There was a government vocational expert there, and her job is to say whether there is ANY job of any kind for you in the economy. I was told there was not.
Suffice to say, I tuned out of that chat channel and will just play the game. People are plenty nice otherwise, and the vast majority were not in on that discussion.
I know I shouldn't have taken it personally and let it get me upset, but I suffer constantly. I have no life. I would gladly give the SSI away if it meant no more pain. These kinds of people are fucked up and incapable of empathy. They just want to blame the easiest targets, even if they know little about them.

I have a chronic pain disease as well - I consider myself blessed that I'm not YET incapacitated. These are people that have never struggled to hold a toothbrush in a day of their life. They have no idea about the realities of this world . . . at this time.
But remember - what goes around comes back around.

I am 27 and have been playing them since I was a kid. Mostly MUXes and MUSHes, but sometimes MUDs. You are not alone in your geekdom.
The particular game was GemStone IV. Its prior incarnation, GS3, was my first MUD way back. I still play because I love the game, even if there is a rabid fundie section of the playerbase.
When someones value is based solely upon what they do for a living and what they produce or don't produce we've tilted away from a humanity that will thrive and grow. We are not cogs in fricken wheels helping to move along a fricken business machine. Work is highly over rated IMO.
As an aside...we are retired for the most part but my SO is looking for part time work. He/we have owned several successful businesses and he is applying for a part time job with a non profit. The application for a low paying minimal wage job was five pages and required answering 6 pages of essay questions. In addition the interview rounds will consist of three separate face to face meetings. Now seriously......I understand companies want to hire he best possible people but is this REALLY necessary?
Now I realize that it's easy for me to be critical...I no longer walk in worker shoes. I am happy though that we still live in a society that is still capable of recognizing that not all have to carry that burden through their lives. That sometimes the human body breaks down and we need to lift it up. Those people who don't recognize that are sad sorry excuses of humanity. FUCK EM! and not in the good way.
