2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumJust volunteered and made 100 phone calls...
Made calls to the state of Nevada. They put me on the computerized phone method, but I didn't care for that so I switched to written lists.
Majority of calls were missed (no one home or VM)
Of the the calls I reached:
Most said = Yes, voting Obama; Thank you for informing me I could vote early; committed to voting this week; took the voting location closest to them; no, they were not interested in volunteering for the campaign (mostly due to time)
Majority of yes answers were from men and majority over age 40
The majority of women said yes; they were all under age 30
Only one person said emphatically no - an elderly lady said she wasn't voting for anyone as she is just discouraged by all of it. One person (a man) said he doesn't vote anymore, hasn't for years.
I got at least three refusals to answer and two hang ups (as I was mid sentence into my introduction).
I talked to seven Latino voters - five said yes on voting Obama; two only spoke Spanish (and I don't, so I had to just thank them and hang up).
I'm sorry I don't have exact numbers/percentages, but I was very encouraged. These were, of course, a mix of registered Democrats/Independents.
I'm going back again this week on two different occasions and plan to watch the debate tomorrow at the same volunteer location. I found both comfort and inspiration volunteering with other upbeat, determined volunteers.
Enthusiasm gap, my ass - GOTV!

(14,691 posts)I made a few calls to other volunteers a couple weeks ago. I find phone work really stressful (don't ask) but there are opportunities near me to call with others this week and I'm going to do that. I'm out of money to give anyway LOL.

(7,887 posts)Can you give those Spanish speaking numbers to your supervisor so someone else can call them?
There is an AWESOME video in Spanish with English subtitles. Help you with a few key phrases.

(658 posts)- yes, they will call those numbers back (using volunteers who speak Spanish).
I get very nervous making calls and I'm not sure why as I'm pretty relaxed speaking to others. I think it's about going off script a tad and speaking from a place of truth. After about 10 calls, I wasn't using the script at all and just spoke to folks one on one - which was absolutely more effective!

I was thinking about that woman who said she wasn't going to vote because she was discouraged by the whole thing. Poor sweetie.. I can just imagine her getting blasted by Ads and not being able to discern what is real and what is poopycock.

Out of 70 calls, I got about 7 answers.
I think when they saw an out-of-state unknown cell phone number on the caller ID they didn't pick up.
3 were for Obama
2 were for Romney
2 didn't want to talk
