Facebook, 10/19/2012: How to Deal w/Romney Supporters?

A good friend who believes in respectful dialog (his tagline is a famous Voltaire quote: "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.&quot made a post about the importance of "getting along" with the opposition -

"I WISH that the two parties could get along ... (snip) It is that spirit that needs to be brought back to this country. A spirit that say while we have differences we are so much alike. While we disagree on so many things there are so many more human things that unite us...."

My Response:

I don't feel friendly toward Romney supporters; I feel contempt and terror. Contempt because they seem to be totally divorced from reality at a level I find shocking - math, for example: 8 years under Clinton/Democrat = economic prosperity and peace; 8 years under Bush/Republican = economic disaster and thousands of dead Americans in terror attacks and wars; 4 years under Obama/Democrat = recovering economy and getting out of the stupid wars. Imagine if the Republicans in Congress were actually helping! As for the terror? 2% of pregnancies are ectopic, and these fuckwits want to let those women die (which is what happens if the pregnancy doesn't get terminated in those situations); idiotic comments about "slavery wasn't really all that bad" and "legitimate rape" -- toss in the destruction of the social safety net, and these nut jobs make Freddy Krueger look like a comedy show. "Let us all sit down politely and discuss why some people are more equal than others? Non-whites, LGBT, and women = UNDER the bus?" I think they have magic mirrors, because honestly, I don't know how they can't see the big flaming word IDIOT tattooed across their forehead. How can one be civil in a conversation like that? Will they pray for my soul really hard as they burn me at the stake? That is the tradition they come from, and I reject it.

My friend then pointed out how non-logical it is to ignore 50% of the country and their world views, and I made a pithy statement about humans and logic. We both walked away feeling we'd made our point, and completely convinced we are correct in our thinking.

I love my friend. We are both obviously idiots.

1. Just point out

that everytime the Dems move to the right to compromise, the Repubs just run away to the far right and keep running.

You can't compromise with someone who keeps moving positions.

The idea with compromise is that BOTH sides are a little unhappy, but both sides are also a LITTLE happy.

How do you compromise about "it is okay for people to be a LITTLE dead" (when you pass laws interfering with medical care)?
