A spokesman for Mr. Sanders, Michael Briggs, pointed to polls showing Mr. Sanders performing better than Mrs. Clinton in a matchup against the leading Republican candidate, Donald J. Trump. He noted Mr. Sanderss significant strength among young voters, who he said represented the countrys future. He said that he wished he knew why Mr. Sanders, 74, was trailing among older voters. Its certainly not because of his record, Mr. Briggs said, noting Mr. Sanderss work in the Senate on expanding Social Security and containing drug costs. No one has been more at the forefront of issues impacting seniors.
