2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHillary didn't just vote for the Iraqi War
I keep hearing this over and over again from both sides. Hillary says her vote was a mistake and for one side all is forgiven. But, what is forgotten is that not only did she vote for the war she stumped for the war. She went out and lobbied for the war. She got other Democrats to vote for the war in other words. And she did it in payment for money to help rebuild New York City. She says this, I am not making this up I couldn't because I wouldn't think anyone would be that stupid. But, there it is. She could have lobbied for money for New York City no strings attached. Because who in their right mind believes it's even a possibility that not giving New York City funds to rebuild would get by the public without an uproar. No, New York City was going to get money. It might have been a bit of a fight, but probably no harder than lobbying for a war that many Democrats didn't want. And this is how we start losing progressives. This is how a third party grows.

(36,418 posts)You hear very little about Iraq from the GOP. Benghazi!!!!! is all about not sending enough troops and firepower into the region.

(6,409 posts)Like so many Democrats, Clinton voted for the war because she was afraid not to. The old "duped by bad intelligence" excuse was transparent from the beginning. The "money to rebuild New York" is just going from the ridiculous to the sublime. She just needs to admit she was swept up in the hyper-patriotic fervor and did not dare oppose public war hysteria. There's really no shame in this. It happens on a regular basis, and only a handful of our elected representatives have the courage to oppose the public when they get whipped up for war.

The only "mistake" she made was that her vote wouldn't rightfully come back to haunt her.

(20,709 posts)The IWR was going to happen one way or another, she couldn't have stopped it. Yes, her vote was a mistake, but they are separate issues.
And, no, she didn't accept the 9-11 money as a bribe, that's a myth propagated by conspiracy theorists.

(4,558 posts)I seem to recall the vote being led by the Senate minority leader Tom Daschle and his deputy Harry Reid.
Hillary was a first term Senator, so do you have something of substance to back up that assertion that a first term Senator from New York weilded all of the power to whip up the vast majority of Democrats into supporting the HR 114?
