The Sanders campaign says he voted for the 1994 crime bill because it contained a ban on assault weapons but that ban wasnt in the version of the bill he initially supported.

The Bernie Sanders campaign explained the Vermont senators support for the 1994 crime bill on Thursday with a release saying he voted for the bill in part because it contained a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons.
The House version of the bill included a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons, the release said. Sanders had supported the ban since 1988.
The House version of the bill, which passed the House that April and which Sanders has been criticized for voting for when he was a representative from Vermont, did not include an assault weapons ban.
The ban was in the version of the bill that passed the Senate. Sanders ultimately did vote for the bill with the ban in it, and President Bill Clinton signed it into law.

He had just arrived at the DC airport and had taken on enemy fire as the plane landed.

(8,760 posts)3. more smoke and mirrors from Team Hillary
Do you know what ALSO wasn't in the original bill that Bernie voted for?
the "mass incarceration and death penalty provisions in the bill" ...that made it objectionable.
Team Hillary can't attack Bernie without lying.

You know, it's gotten to the point that whenever I see a Hillary supporter post something that makes Bernie look bad, I just give it a few minutes before the truth comes out. Wouldn't you know it, it's happened again.

(8,760 posts)5. Matt Taibbi said something about Bernie that made him different from other Congressmen....
and Senators......He actually reads the bills in their entirety.
So unless they slip in massive changes at the last minute, and call a vote...Bernie is one of the few who knows exactly what they are voting on.
