South Carolina black voters say they know Hillary Clinton well enough to pass on Bernie Sanders

His hands caked in grime from his repair job, Walter Brown coughed out a laugh when asked for his thoughts about Bernie Sanders, whose insurgent presidential campaign has electrified liberals around the country.

“Who is Bernie Sanders?” he said while sitting on a bench during an afternoon break. Brown, 59, is already leaning toward Hillary Clinton and doesn’t plan to start researching other options.

“I don’t have time,” he said, gesturing toward the downtown building where he’s been working. “I’m here all day.”

Sanders’ effort to broaden his appeal beyond white progressives and young people has run into a roadblock here in the form of black working-class voters, who in interviews here this week repeatedly voiced their longtime loyalty to Clinton. Several echoed Brown’s point that they don’t have time to explore an alternative nor interest in learning about Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont who was practically unknown in South Carolina before launching his presidential bid.

Matt Karp, writing in the Jacobin, looked at polling data from the fall and found that 35% of black voters in south carolina thought a "Sanders administration would favor the rich." 12% though Sanders favored the poor. Only 10 % thought a Clinton administration would " favor the rich." Democrats have their own low information voter problems. The media blackout up until the Iowa caucus along with Clinton and her surrogate lies and propaganda have really worked in the south.

But it's fair.

Or do you suppose there are zero low information voters in the black community?

I imagine there are low info women voters too.... and low info white voters.... and low info gay voters.... and any set of humans you care to name.

Race card, anyone?

Apparently Bernie has been making a hurried and perfunctory appeal to POC with tv and radio interviews, but it seems unlikely that it's going to have any meaningful effect on what we (and he, presumably) anticipate will happen in the coming days.

A free slogan for her campaign!

Hey, if people plan to vote for her because they don't have time to look into the other options, that's no crime. This economy keeps people busy trying to make ends meet. At any rate, she clearly must be "good enough" or else they'd just plan to stay home.

It's rather hollow support, though.

41. Again, Sanders is campaign is based on a revolution that is not happening
Fri Feb 26, 2016, 07:40 PM
Feb 2016

The premise of the OP appears to be that it is the fault of the voters that his message is not getting through which is sad. Again, it is not just South Carolina where the Sanders revolution is failing to catch on. No one has seen any evidence of the so-called Sanders revolution https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/02/10/sorry-bernie-sanders-there-is-zero-evidence-of-your-political-revolution-yet/

Bernie Sanders recorded a resounding victory in New Hampshire's Democratic primary Tuesday. He crushed his rival, Hillary Clinton, with no less than 60 percent of the vote. If Sanders hopes not only to win the election but to achieve his ambitious progressive agenda, though, that might not be enough.

To succeed, Sanders might have to drive Americans who don't normally participate to the polls. Unfortunately for him, groups who usually do not vote did not turn out in unusually large numbers in New Hampshire, according to exit polling data.

https://img.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src=&w=1484

...As for Sanders, he credited his victory to turnout. "Because of a huge voter turnout -- and I say huge -- we won," he said in his speech declaring victory, dropping the "h" in "huge." "We harnessed the energy, and the excitement that the Democratic party will need to succeed in November."

In fact, Sanders won by persuading many habitual Democratic primary voters to support him. With 95 percent of precincts reporting their results as of Wednesday morning, just 241,000 ballots had been cast in the Democratic primary, fewer than the 268,000 projected by New Hampshire Secretary of State William Gardner last week. Nearly 289,000 voters cast ballots in the state's Democratic primary in 2008.

To be sure, the general election is still seven months away. Ordinary Americans might be paying little attention to the campaign at this point, and if Sanders wins the nomination, he'll have the help of the Democratic Party apparatus in registering new voters. The political revolution hasn't started, though, at least not yet.

Without this revolution, I am not sure how Sanders proposes to advance his unrealistic agenda

line from the "progressives" who love to scream the loudest about how liberal and loving they are.

Sanders built his whole campaign on revolution. He was going to awaken the masses, help them swarm to the polls and together, we'd all sweep in a new era of... something. Problem is, even after 30 years in Congress, too many people have absolutely no idea who he is and the masses that he was supposed to awaken are not coming out to vote. Dem primary turnout is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than it was 8 years ago and it is widely acknowledged that his resounding win in NH came on the backs of Republicans and not Democrats.

Some will continue to blame all of this on black folks, but just because we aren't as easily fooled as others doesn't make us the problem.

People who ignore politics do it because they don't want to ruin their day. I can totally understand why someone would want to tune it out while they carry on with the hard work of living. But, this is not SUPPORT, it's the kind of lukewarm support that could turn on a dime.

I think Hillary's surrogates are overestimating.
