If the Party is being destroyed its being destroyed by its shift to the right. And I wonder who is doing that in this campaign
We just aren't going to stand for it anymore.

The guy wouldn't even register as a Democrat when McGovern was the nominee. Or Mondale. Or Dukakis. Or Carter.

(18,775 posts)In politics, the Third Way is a position akin to centrism that tries to reconcile right-wing and left-wing politics by advocating a varying synthesis of right-wing economic and left-wing social policies.[1][2] The Third Way was created as a serious re-evaluation of political policies within various centre-left progressive movements in response to international doubt regarding the economic viability of the state; economic interventionist policies that had previously been popularized by Keynesianism and contrasted with the corresponding rise of popularity for economic liberalism and the New Right.[3] The Third Way is promoted by some social democratic and social liberal movements.

(2,900 posts)never got a budget passed in our party. Never held a government post for our party.
Many of his supporters do little but attack our party, including at this site.
He did the same kind of activism for civil rights that most of us did during our adult lives, but never for our party. Always in disdain of it, from the beginning of his career.
Yeah, he's pure. We get that. He's never made a compromise of his principles. But he's also never in his Congressional career brokered a deal. Cute amendments are nice, but his legislative experience is hampered by his demand for purity. We've seen the purity on the right in the Freedom Caucus (is that what those 40 nuts are called?) and Bernie the backbencher for decades. But he is just that. A backbencher. A backbencher who only last year finally joined the party.
Maybe he thinks he joined to save it. That's not the effect its having at the DU. At the DU, it is destroying the party.

(2,900 posts)our most liberal candidate, was the nominee. McGovern was so pure in his liberalism that he was easily beaten, even by Richard Nixon, a man hated even by Republicans.
Yeah, you guys can go for purity, but if you do, you are going to deal with eight years of one of President Rubio, Cruz or Trump. All Supreme Court and Court of Appeals nominees appointed during the terms for the next four to eight years will be appointed by the President. The Supreme Court is where social change has happened during the last eight. All the good with gay marriage depended on one swing vote. All the evil with election bribery (Citizens United) was that same swing vote. Obama will nominate a very moderate judge this coming week who will be a swing vote. The next eight years will see at least three appointees, and the Court will be all conservative, or mostly moderate and liberal. The same with the lower courts. Courts are the real long term social change forum.
You can turn 2016 into 2000 again by Nadering it with Sanders, getting you Alito and Roberts, or you can Obama it with Clinton and get Kagen and Sotomayor. The lower courts decide everyday things even more. The president doesn't decide real case ever. But her judicial appointments decide thousands every year. For years to come.
