Megadeth singer endorses Rick Santorum, calls Newt Gingrich ‘an angry little man’

In an interview with Music Radar Tuesday, Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine dished on his support for Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum:

"Earlier in the election, I was completely oblivious as to who Rick Santorum was, but when the dude went home to be with his daughter when she was sick, that was very commendable. Also, just watching how he hasn't gotten into doing these horrible, horrible attack ads like Mitt Romney's done against Newt Gingrich, and then the volume at which Newt has gone back at Romney… You know, I think Santorum has some presidential qualities, and I'm hoping that if it does come down to it, we'll see a Republican in the White House ... and that it's Rick Santorum."

A spokesman for Rick Santorum's presidential campaign did not immediately respond for a request for comment.

For Mustaine, who hopes "whatever is in the White House next year is a Republican," candidates Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul just don't cut it.

The Megadeth album "United Abominations" is itself an abomination, an obvious attack on the UN and promoting the idea that the End Times will occur in our lifetime.

He seems to hate Barack Obama for whatever reason - and this isn't the first time he's expressed that opinion.

I've also read that Mustaine turned to Christianity about a decade ago and has since had a preacher following him around so that he doesn't "stray" by indulging in booze, drugs or extramarital sex.

His lyrics have always been laced with Christian themes ever since Megadeth's first album in 1985, but it seems since his "conversion" he's turned into a full-blown member of the Religious Right. I find it strange how so many alcoholics and drug addicts turn to a right-wing brand of Christianity to help them quit - like they're exchanging one addiction for another.

was just talking with a cousin who's kid is in a bad relationship. the kid's uncle is now a born-again type, but he spent twenty years on crack...in jail, stealing from my family...the whole nine. guess who calls the kid stupid, weak, etc? the former crackhead turned religious fanatic. typical.

Mustaine's likely following a path, judging by some of these posts, that's common among recovering addicts. What do agnostics/atheists do? Seems to me turning to something you don't really believe in isn't going to work wonders in successfully stopping a problem. I cannot find a porn-addiction program that isn't fundie-rooted.

I've known a few people who have gone to AA, and they were all pretty clear that AA doesn't require a belief in the Judeo-Christian concept of God, or in fact any God whatsoever. It just mentions believing in a higher power than yourself, which could literally be anyone or anything.

What bugs me is not that Mustaine or anyone else turned to Christianity to help them kick an addiction - my view is, if it works for you, go for it - it's that all too often, people become self-appointed arbiters of right and wrong afterwards, thinking that they suddenly have all the answers and can dictate how people should live their lives. At the same time, everyone around them remembers what a mess they were not too long ago.

Mustaine is just another example of this. As I've pointed out, he was hardly right-wing before his 2002 "come to Jesus" moment - and songs like "Peace Sells", "Countdown to Extinction", "Foreclosure Of A Dream" and "Hangar 18" definitely sound like they were written by a lefty - yet now he's embraced the most extreme right-wing religious nuttery as part of his conversion.

Here's someone who was kicked out of Metallica for drinking too much. And yet, how the fuck do you get kicked out of Metallica in 1983 for drinking too much? Only if you are also an asshole, and Metallica already had James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, so they had met their quota.

The early music was alright even if laced with rambling conspiracy gibberish, everything since Countdown to Extinction was pure garbage.

Fundamentalist Christianity doesn't lend itself well to death metal.
