Two American heroes. I am honored and privileged to live in a time where these two men have existed, cared and fought for the rights of all Americans.

(44,986 posts)we know Bernie Sanders. Elon James White nailed it in this tweet, Bernie was not known then. Bernie was among the thousands in the crowd.

We need more unity to move forward, not more division, imo.

(2,161 posts)My admiration and respect for John Lewis is lifelong. No primary kerfluffle could ever change that. Good people can come to different conclusions about the best candidate for the Democrats.
I will vote for Bernie and continue to respect John Lewis.
Well said.

(40,416 posts)Because I supported the DU TOS. Apparently that is against the Bernie group SOP.
Under such conditions, I don't know what good the candidate groups do other than to just piss off people, no matter who they support.
Remarkably, I can still post in the Hillary group, since I am respectful, something the Bernie group hosts apparently never take into consideration. It isn't sufficient that one should support the candidate, one must also support all the group members, even when they flagrantly violate the DU TOS and are tombstoned.
Pitiful!
And apparently the same is happening in the other candidate groups.
I cherish my freedom in the Hillary group and promise to never abuse it.
Too bad about the Bernie group. Their hosts need to get a grip on what's helpful and what's not. They also need to align their SOP so that it supports the DU TOS.
Sorry for the rant, but this bullshit needs to be exposed.

(279 posts)Yeah, Bernie marched....but he didn't get his head bludgeoned within an inch of his fucking life for MY RIGHT TO VOTE.....John Lewis did.
I respect Sen. Sanders very much....I love his passion....if he's the nominee you better fucking believe I'm a vote for him....but I will NOT TOLERATE ANY disrespect of Congressman lewis...FUCKING PERIOD.

(16,286 posts)So far today I heard he was Hillary's slave with a bad memory and that he is trying to divide the American people.
I heard those fucking things right here on DU, believe it or not.

watch this new take on white privilege get real interesting.

(2,382 posts)... that I think Mr. Lewis' remarks were grossly misrepresented by an oily reporter with an axe to grind. In the first OP I saw, Darren Sands interjected misleading characterizations between quotes attributed to Mr. Lewis in an obvious effort to throw shade on Bernie's participation in the Civil Rights movement in the early sixties. In typical fashion, certain factions within the Clinton camp implied, with no real proof, that John Lewis was casting doubt on the veracity of Bernie's documented Civil Rights record.
Such underhanded efforts to discredit Sanders really should be beneath Secretary Clinton. She would be wise to rein in the less scrupulous members of her staff; they are doing more harm than good.

(4,458 posts)This is all a mountain of crap stirred by Media, imo.
Regardless of intent in publishing this piece-it Has succeeded as Bait to have yet another argument.
This is only deepening the Divide between HRC supporters and Bernie supporters.
I personally have Long admired Rep Lewis. I do believe that he and everyone else who have made their choices of whom to support have every bit as much right to choose a candidate of Their choice as I do.
It's democracy.
Let's don't do this. Please.

(368 posts)I really believe the exposure Lewis and the others received, downplaying Sanders involvement in civil rights for the last 50 years, and also trying to convince us that they(or some) were from the streets to justify themselves, equates to me as "a stab in the back".

(45,319 posts)Lewis asked his colleagues this: Why do you want to destroy the love they hold in their hearts? Why do you want to crush their hopes, their dreams, their unions, their aspirations? We are talking about human beings, people like you.

(1,727 posts)He's a more courageos person than I could ever hope to be.
However, that doesn't change the fact that his comments on Sanders' civil rights record were totally disingenuous, nor does it prevent me from pointing out the logical inconsistency of people who are hostile to Sanders for his positions on racial issues while supporting two people who've actually done damage to the black community with their actions as elected officials.

(4,558 posts)I can very honestly say I'd have done the same thing had it been the other way around.
I still admire the hell out of Susan Sarandon as well.
There's been waaaay too much tossing people under the bus (both sides) because of our support of our candidates (especially perplexing to me since in my estimate we've got 2 damn fine ones to be proud of.. ESPECIALLY when you consider that clown car the Republicans are running.

(1,252 posts)When he mentioned he never met him Bernie was one of how many thousands and thousands who demonstrated and marched? He was not yet a leader in the community. I believe him when he says he was there. Didn't Bernie even get arrested for protesting?

(11,432 posts)Or something like that. I think they are trying to bait him and us by the things they are saying.
I think Bernie should be like Will Smith when that girl talked crap about him and he talked about how good she was on movie and how much he respected her.

(34,095 posts)This push to throw anyone who has done a hero's work for this country under the bus because of one thing, even if it is a big thing, they did or said is so immature. Nader is one example, Cornel West another and there are so many others.
I think what he said was terrible and I am upset that he is doing this and pissed off at the Clinton campaign (I don't think I can get any more pissed off than I have been at them for the last few decades) for their scummy but usual tactics. They obviously believe in laying waste to any and all good things done by someone that is not in their corner.
Sad.
