Democratic presidential contenders Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders will square off in a debate in Flint on March 6, two days before Michigan Democrats head to the polls. The Democratic National Committee is sanctioning the televised debate in Flint, which Clinton wanted in her quest to continue shining a national spotlight on the citys lead-contaminated water crisis.
The Sanders campaign originally proposed a March 3 debate at an unspecified location in Michigan.
Michigans presidential primary is March 8.
The Flint debate is on a Sunday and is one of three new debates approved by the DNC. The exact time and location in Flint wasnt included in the announcement.
The first of these new debates is confirmed to take place in Flint, Michigan on March 6th, with the remaining two taking place in April and May with times and locations to be determined, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a Wednesday statement. We will continue to work closely with both campaigns as we finalize the remaining details.
Sanders said Wednesday on CNN that he and Clinton agreed to additional debates in Michigan and California.
We didnt get all the commitments that I wanted, Sanders said on CNN. We got California, we got Michigan and thats good. I wanted a debate in New York City ... but Secretary Clinton has not agreed to do that.
Sanders had wanted an April debate in Brooklyn, New York, where he was born and Clintons campaign headquarters is located.
After Clinton narrowly edged Sanders in Mondays Iowa caucuses, the former secretary of state is in a pitched battle with the Vermont U.S. senator in next Tuesdays New Hampshire primary.
Clinton and Sanders will appear at a televised town hall meeting at 9 p.m. Wednesday in Manchester, New Hampshire, sponsored by CNN.
Then the candidates will square off again Thursday night in a DNC-sanctioned debate at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.
Other DNC-run debates are scheduled for Feb. 11 in Milwaukee and March 9 in Miami.

DNC has sanctioned 3 additional debates one in Flint, MI on March 3. The other two will take place in April and May, one of which will be in California. Bernie still pushing for the last of the three to be in NY.
Unsaid is whether the NH debate is DNC sanctioned, I assume it is? Making four total debates added.
Settle in, everyone, this race is going into May at least.

(1,013 posts)I don't understand why a former Senator from NY would not want
to debate in NY. Hoping they can work it out.
Peace.

(13,190 posts)I don't get why a NY debate would be bad for her?
Uncle Joe
(58,270 posts)is leading her there by double digits in the polls, she has little to lose and this would give her another shot just before their primary is held.
Bernie may be a Senator, former Congressman and Mayor from Vermont but Brooklyn is in his roots, Hillary being a Senator from that state is afraid of being out shined by him there.
Hillary loves to have debates in Bernie's "backyard" when she has little to lose, but is too timid in allowing such a thing to happen in her "home" state.
Uncle Joe
(58,270 posts)that was a signal to Schultz that for the first time Hillary was serious about wanting more debates, it wasn't just a pretense anymore.

(34,661 posts)Todays DNC meeting took a hard look at these numbers and the bottom line is,we did not get people to the Caucus's,in fact we were some 40-50k short of 2012. Rethugs kicked our asses and that I'am sure woke someone up. As far as DWS is concerned, got a hunch the campaigns are not going there, and we as Democrats have to get our people out their and increase the face time and volume of that face time. The Rethugs are getting so much free face time via the networks it is unbelievable, and as far as Clinton is concerned, her message is coming off a bit sour. And Mr. Sanders has been very gentle and needs to crank it up. We have a White House to save as well as a Senate to flip, and which ever Candidate that prevails, will need each and every one of us to make it happen.
