Des Moines, Iowa Eagle-eyed Hawkeyes don't know who he is and he's getting no face time with Hillary Clinton.
But Mayor de Blasio, on the first full day of his five-day Iowa campaign push for his former boss, said the trip had a lot of value nonetheless.
"What our mission is here, is to keep pumping up and energizing the folks who already are the true believers, he said. Give them energy, give them support and to go for folks who are active Democrats but are still not decided firmly."

Come home, Bill. It's not like there is nothing for you to do here.

(19,404 posts)They may not recognize him, but I'm sure that many, perhaps most, know who de Blasio is.

(27,310 posts)who think Iowans would know who the Mayor of New York is? And why should they know? It is not like he has a whit of impact on their lives.

(27,310 posts)The Clinton campaign hasn't even included him in any official campaign events. He won't appear anywhere with Hillary or Bill or Chelsea.

(19,404 posts)Too many Americans are indeed ignorant about such things. But the article implies that people are more ignorant in Flyover Country.

(23,156 posts)But I must say, that I probably would not recognize Mayor deBlasio were he to knock on my door.
Many years ago when I worked at National Airport in Washington DC as a ticket agent, I never recognized Washington Redskins players, or anyone on local TV (because I didn't own a TV back then) but I always recognized columnists with the Washington Post.
We all have our blind spots.

(1,443 posts)most Iowans probably think Giuliani is still mayor of NY.
(he has national name recognition because of 9/11)
Here's a story that I hope is relevant.
I used to work the information desk at my hospital. I live in Santa Fe, NM. It's the state capitol, which is slightly important.
Several years ago we had a very bad fire season, with crews being brought in from all over to help us out. One afternoon I got a call from our Governor's office saying the Gov would like to visit an injured firefighter who was in the hospital. I connected that person to our security office.
A bit later a group of happy, somewhat goofy, firefighters came by my, asking for the room of an injured coworker. (An aside: firefighters are all very handsome, very fit. Total eye candy for this older lady.) I gave them the room number, they went happily away. A few minutes later they came back, rather downcast and dejected. I asked what was wrong, and was told there was a Do Not Disturb sign on the door. I gave them my sympathy and they left. Perhaps two minutes later our Governor, Susanna Martinez came in, and I of course recognized her. So I asked, "Do you know where you're going?" She said yes. Then I asked, "Do you want me to let the nurse's know you're on your way?" and she said no. Not a problem. At this point I put 2 and 2 together and realized she was visiting the same guy.
A few minutes later my happy, goofy firefighters came back, saying their friend had called them and they could certainly visit him. So I told them, "If there's some lady in the room, just tell her she can leave."
The firefighters were from Montana, and I knew they would not recognize the Governor of New Mexico.
I do know she came downstairs and exited before the guys did.
