Bernie Sanders Has Had Gout and Other Ailments, but Is in ‘Very Good Health,’ Doctor Says

DES MOINES — Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has suffered a variety of ailments over his 74 years, including gout, diverticulitis, hernias and a cyst on his vocal cord, but he is in “very good health,” according to a letter from the congressional physician whose office has treated the senator for the last 26 years.

The letter, released Thursday by the Sanders campaign, was dated Jan. 20 and signed by Dr. Brian P. Monahan, the attending physician of Congress. He wrote that Mr. Sanders was last examined on Nov. 18, and had normal readings for blood pressure, pulse and blood count. He said the senator had no history of cardiovascular disease.

...

Dr. Monahan said that Mr. Sanders had been treated for “medical conditions including” gout, mildly high cholesterol levels, diverticulitis, hypothyroidism, laryngitis stemming from esophageal reflux, and lumbar strain. Mr. Sanders also has had some “superficial skin tumors” completely removed, he said.

Mr. Sanders takes levothryoxine (a thyroid hormone replacement) daily and uses indomethacin (an anti-inflammatory drug) intermittently, the doctor wrote.

I just couldn't help myself, urban legends are so darn much fun.

Professional Opinion: What is 'gout' and why is it called 'the rich man's disease'?

I have a friend with gout and I can tell you he is NOT a rich man and is very careful about what he eats and drinks.
