What is pragmatic about compromising progressive

positions to rightwing positions or continually chipping away at the New Deal and safety nets? I keep hearing that is pragmatic or some sort of center. The center of what exactly? Why is it when people choose a candidate like Bernie, they are considered unreasonable because they want to keep what is progressive and expand on it rather than continually drift right? Was the whole idea of progressivism wrong to begin with?
