Obama stands firm against reparations

Sunday, August 3, 2008

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) | Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama opposes offering reparations to the descendants of slaves, putting him at odds with some black groups and leaders.

The first black man to win a major-party presidential nomination argues that government should instead combat the legacy of slavery by improving schools, health care and the economy for all.

“I have said in the past - and I’ll repeat again - that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed,” the Illinois Democrat said recently.

Coates is asking why Sanders is using the excuse that it would never get through Congress to justify his opposition to reparations when that excuse does not stop him from pushing for economic reform he wants. Right here on this board, Sanders supporters throw a fit whenever anyone suggests that his plans can't get passed - they're told they are protecting the status quo, called cowards, lectured about the need to have a revolution that makes people uncomfortable. So how do you justify that Sanders' response to a similarly revolutionary idea - reparations - is that it won't get anywhere and it would be divisive? It sounds to Coates - and many others - as if Sanders' passion for revolution and reform has its limits.
