JTBC news (south korea) reported that President Moon Jae In was on his way to Mount Baektu to fulfill a long held dream to hike up the famous volcanic mountain on the North Korean Chinese border. The iconic mountain and its crater lake are a symbol of the Korean national spirit. South Koreans have typically visited the popular tourist destination from the Chinese side.

The mountain has been considered sacred by Koreans throughout history. According to Korean mythology, it was the birthplace of Dangun, the founder of the first Korean kingdom, Gojoseon (2333–108 BC), whose parents were said to be Hwanung, the Son of Heaven, and Ungnyeo, a bear who had been transformed into a woman.[23] Many subsequent kingdoms of Korea, such as Buyeo, Goguryeo, Balhae, Goryeo and Joseon worshipped the mountain.[24][25]
