I used to live there.
I wanted to experience living in a big city... and since I worked in Mtn View, the reverse commute (sometimes by train) was not too bad. So I moved to Japantown.
Of all the big cities to live in... San Francisco was on the top of my list ( others were Boston, London, Sydney, Paris... maybe Barcelona ).
BTW, I love to visit NYC... for like a week at a time and then I'm ready to leave.

That in the United States there are only THREE Japantowns (Nihonmachi) 日本街 and they are all in CALIFORNIA; in order by size:
San Francisco Nihonmachi
Los Angeles Little Tokyo
San Jose, Japantown
