AronRa responds to the Chapel Hill attack

He hosts the Atheist Experience, of which the suspect was a fan, so he has a reason to speak:

Edit: Feel free to add other responses. This issue is important, and I feel it's important that we don't let anyone else define us in regards to this event. These two people mention that one major criticism that atheists generally have of religion is how violent it is, sso an atheist that acts so violently didn't get that message completely through his head.

Things are also still in motion, and all we really know is that three humans are dead, and the man responsible turned himself in.

3. Here is what I learned this morning.

Hicks confronted other people over parking spaces, and he did so armed. He apparently had a thing about the reserved parking spaces in his apartment complex.

Michael Nam points to a parking space in the Finley Forest condominium complex in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It doesn't look like much - a stretch of pavement and a stone marker with the word "reserved" in faded white letters. Two squashed pinecones are lying on the ground.

It meant something to Craig Stephen Hicks, though. Once when Nam parked his car there, Hicks came out of his apartment with a gun holstered on his hip. It was at about four on a November afternoon.

"I was like, 'Is this for real?'" Nam says. "I'm not afraid of your gun, but why the hell did you bring it out?"

They argued over the parking space. Hicks, who is 46, took out his mobile phone and showed him a map of the condominium complex, pointing to the places where people are allowed to park - and which places are reserved.

It may turn out that his actions were motivated by his anti-theistic beliefs. So far there is no evidence demonstrating that. There are instead a boat load of theists jumping up and down all over DU braying "See this is what new atheism does!".

Fuck. That. Shit.

4. I have a similar issue where I live

with parking, that is.

The apartment complex where I live with my wonderful wife has reserved parking for all residents and several non-reserved spaces for guests. In the first few months of living there, all sorts of people would park in our spaces. We were told not to confront these individuals, but to report them to the office, which we did. Things got better, and we have not had anyone parking in our spaces in months now.

Except for our next-door neighbor. She has the parking space next to one of ours. She is a total fucking moron: about 25 years old, gorgeous, and simply must be a kept woman with a sugar daddy. I accidentally received some of her mail once and opened it not thinking, and saw her paystub inside. She does not make enough money to live in this complex.

Anyway, she cannot park worth a shit. Almost every day, she parks either on the line between the spaces or actually OVER the line into our space. Without fail. It is really aggravating. We figure, she's young and stupid (like we were at her age), so we have not gotten too upset about it (other than an occasional rapidly-opened car door that "accidentally" makes a ding in her car. Oops!)

We are both over 50. We've seen our share of young adult idiots. They drive too fast, are always in a hurry, are always on the phone or texting in their cars, or always on the phone in the garage or in the hallway, and just can't be bothered to act responsibly. Someone of a more unbalanced disposition, like Hicks, could easily be tipped over the edge and do something extreme to this woman.

So, I can understand the anger about parking spaces, especially if the offenders are very young. They just don't really seem to give a shit. Still, of course, this anger does not justify violence. But parking disputes have often escalated into violence in this city.
