Oklahoma missionary accused of raping African orphans goes to court

http://kfor.com/2014/08/01/oklahoma-missionary-accused-of-raping-african-orphans-goes-to-court/

EDMOND, Okla. (KFOR) – An Oklahoma teenager accused of raping orphaned children went before a judge on Friday.

Last month, 19-year-old Matthew Durham was arrested after authorities in Kenya claimed he molested and raped orphans during a mission trip.

According to court records, officials claim Durham raped boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 9-years-old during a mission trip to a Kenyan orphanage.

On Friday, Durham went before a federal judge in Oklahoma City to decide whether there was enough evidence to proceed with a trial.

Only three posts before a NTS in the Religion group. Maybe we need to revive the NTS Pool?

At least this guy is on trial. If he were Catholic and a priest he would probably have a different parish by now. And/or, if they couldn't keep people quiet, his parish/diocese would go "bankrupt" so that victims couldn't sue and recover.

According to court testimony, prosecutors say that Durham told a missionary friend that he had a ‘demon’ inside him that was named ‘Luke’.

Prosecutors claim that Durham said that “Every night, Luke gets what Luke wants” and ‘Luke’ “wants me to stay here and do evil with him.”

Demons? "Luke"? Notions of "doing evil"?
Nothing whatsoever to do with religion. An unfortunate coincidence that he used those words.

I'm an atheist (really) and I think it's shameful to suggest a link between sexual abuse and religious figures like this, and oh, er... hey, did you hear that Pope Awesome shared a cigarette with a leper the other day...?!

Surprised the missionary program doesn't have safeguards in place to help prevent this kind of thing. I read in an earlier report how he insisting on sleeping with the kids - wtf? I guess they just trust their missionaries, since they're all "good Christians."
