Well lookie here, it's my turn to be tarred with the bigot brush.

Didn't you know, if you call a mashup of superstition and fairy tales that drive people to violence what it is, you're a bigot!

I guess they couldn't stand seeing bullshit being called out straight up, so they invoked DU's automatic censorship system to shut me up.

I have an idea. Why don't those cowardly worms say it to my fucking face instead of wailing to the refs.

Say it to my fucking face. Don't hide behind anonymity.

For those curious:

At Sat Apr 13, 2013, 12:31 AM, an alert was sent on the following post:

Islam deserves to be insulted.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=2664909

REASON FOR ALERT:

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)

ALERTER'S COMMENTS:

Astoundingly moronic post. The poster is attempting to be anti-religion but he just comes across as scared and ignorant. Considering that fully 80% of the world's peoples (INCLUDING LIBERALS) practice a religion of some sort, "Fuck Islam. For that matter, Fuck Christianity, Fuck Judaism, fuck every other set of fairy tales involving asshole skydaddies that are used by narcissistic sociopaths to scare and control people." are the hateful words of a bigot and should not be tolerated here.

JURY RESULTS

A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Sat Apr 13, 2013, 12:38 AM, and voted 4-2 to HIDE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT and said: This kind of language makes DU suck. I agree with the alerter: time to hide this mess.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: As much as I sympathize with the poster, they really need to calm down and express themselves in a less inflamatory manner. Hating haters is still hating and we atheists have to be better then that.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given

I agree with the totality or your reply. I use your last line "Religion poisons everything" every once in a while and have never been hidden for it.

But I would have chosen to hide your reply if I were on a jury. It was pretty nasty for just about anything outside this group. I like to choose battles that win, not just ones that make me feel exonerated. But you're an ass kicker so go for it.

Religions don't all get treated equally when it comes to criticism or mockery.

Make fun of a Quaker and he'll shrug and walk away.
Tell a Jewish joke to a Jew, and he'll laugh and tell you a better one.
Make fun of a Mormon and he'll look sincerely confused and not get it.
Poke fun at a Catholic and he'll turn red-faced and complain of Anti-Catholic bigotry.
Have a laugh at a Liberal Christian and he'll say he doesn't believe that either, but won't say what he does believe.
Sneer at a Fundamentalist Christian, and he'll damn you to Hell.
Mock Islam, and have a huge mob baying outside your window wanting to cut your head off.

There's a large segment of society who thinks we therefore shouldn't criticise or mock Islam.

I do think you were a bit strong with the "fuck (insert religion here)" part. I'm not sure if that had been edited out if it would have kept your post from being hidden.

Some people just go off the deep end if their religion is criticized in the slightest. IMO, they need to suck it up and get a thicker skin. Our criticisms of religion shouldn't affect their belief one way or the other.

But if it does, IMO, it means that they must not be that strong in their belief in the first place.

Didn't you know, the Skeptic's Annotated Quran is a HATE SITE!!! It's full of bigoted propaganda!

How dare they quote chapter and verse directly from the source material and point out the misogynistic horseshit in there?

See, we're all ignorant of Advanced Quaranic Scholarship! Granted, I'm more familiar with the Bible, but if Advanced Quranic Scholarship is anything like Christian theology, I think all we'll run into is the Muslim version of Ray Comfort, Ken Ham and Kirk Cameron.

Yep, I get accused of hating xtians when all I do is quote their scriptures back to them, without comment.

It's their scriptures, but if I point out the hatefulness in it, then that makes me a bigot.

You don't even seem to understand the most basic concept that only Quranic scholars of the highest levels are permitted to interpret the Quran.

There is a fundamental breakdown in logic in this statement.

Yes, only someone completely indoctrinated into a faith can interpret it. They would never ever be BIASED, or try to manipulate the passages as they see fit.

I mean this one: You don't even seem to understand the most basic concept that only Quranic scholars of the highest levels are permitted to interpret the Quran.

To disprove that statement, just Google "ask an imam."

I lived in Egypt for nearly 4 years and Saudi Arabia for 2 years. "Ask an imam" shows are incredibly popular all over the Middle East.

And if these imams are "Quranic scholars of the highest level," then I'm the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. Despite my obvious handicap of being a dumbass American atheist...

These TV/radio imams have their jobs strictly due to their popularity, not their knowledge of the Quran. They're a lot like American televangelists or Rush Limbaugh - anyone with an Islamic religious question can call in and get an Instant Fatwa.

FTR, a "fatwa" is just a religious opinion. As I understand it, in Sharia law, a fatwa is only binding on 2 people - the person who asks for it and the religious authority who issues it.

So when the MSM says "Zawahiri issued a fatwa calling for Muslims to kill all Americans," they're getting it incredibly wrong. They really mean "Zawahiri threw a tantrum." A blanket order to kill people obviously can't be binding on anybody. And Zawahiri isn't a recognized religious authority anyway - that would be a real imam, or maybe a Quranic scholar, etc.

End meandering rant, Part 1...

Every once in a while, the Ask-An-Imams would goof spectacularly and get slapped down by the real Islamic authorities.

One time when I was in Egypt, a woman called in and said her family had a male servant who had worked for them for many years. They wanted to legally adopt him, IIRC because they wanted to make sure he got an inheritance or something.

The Ask-An-Imam guy said, according to the Quran, all the woman had to do was "suckle" the servant and he would automatically be adopted. And yes, "suckle" means exactly what you think it does.

The phone lines immediately burned up with smart-ass Egyptian guys calling in and saying they wanted to be adopted too - preferably by somebody like the Lebanese pop singer Mai Hariri (photo below).

But the fun really started when Ask-An-Imam got a phone call from Souad Saleh. She IS a recognized religious authority, being one of the very few women who teach Sharia law. (At Cairo's Al-Azhar University - the oldest Islamic college in the world.) Saleh was not amused and told him he needed to find another line of work. Among other things...

I just got here and I am baffled

Why are we dancing around the subject and sweet talking our comments?

In the name of been polite is Democratic Underground censoring it's contributors?

I just read about safe havens and what not and I can't believe it...

When I discover this I was happy of the format but I see to many word police, feelings police and do not make me cry police.

While as adult we should maintain respect everyone should have the right to say whatever they want. It is the internet for :G@d" sake
( pun intended).. If you don't like what you reading just delete it and move on...

If we start nitpicking we will lose the point of all discussion which is to provoke a though and to make others feel cognitive dissonance...

Please convince me other wise...
