Vaccine stops brain tumor growth in humans: We're beginning to exploit the Achilles' heel of cancer

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2021/3/28/2023353/-Vaccine-stops-brain-tumor-growth-in-humans-We-re-beginning-to-exploit-the-Achilles-heel-of-cancer

As we learn more and more about cancer, we begin to find characteristics of cancer cells that betray their identity in a way we can attack. One example: Many types of cancer cells have a specific mutation in a protein called IDH1 that normal cells don’t have. The mutation in that protein changes its structure enough that you can induce antibodies to go after it but leave the normal protein — and hence normal cells — alone.

Researchers based in Heidelberg, Germany, led by Michael Platten, have done just that, as they reported March 24 in Nature. They developed a brain cancer vaccine, and the first real tests in humans show that brain tumors are being infiltrated by T cells programmed to go after this protein, and in most cases the progression of the disease is being halted.

We may just be on to something here, folks.

1. They are planning on using the mRNA technology to go after cancer,

malaria and HIV too. We are on the cusp of great things in medicine. Good to get some great news these days.

2. You see how with science one bad thing can lead to something good.

Creating vaccines for covid and rushing them out is giving us data we could not have gotten any other way.
The mRNA style of vac is new and got rushed out there because we had too. Now we can see other avenues
to work with....good bye cancer...you mother fu^$*r.

15. It wasn't rushed out there.

mRNA has been studied for a decade as a means to deal with coronaviruses. Just because SARS-Cov-2 came late to the game doesn't mean that none of the previous research counted.

20. It was ready to go but they rushed to get the covid vaccines out. And now

they have tons of data so they can do even more with mRNA vaccines.

19. The person who discovered/invented the mRNA vaccine lost their funding

at one point. They deserve a Nobel prize.

is the fact that we now have an Administration the recognizes the worth and value of science - and can even actually spell the word!

8. That's just one of....

life's little trade-offs. Of course Bill Gates already had all that information from our iPhone's, but building in redundancy has always been the trademark of Bill and Melinda Gates. They're sneaky that way.

17. Its just amazing how many educated people believe that shit

I mean, assuming there WAS a "chip" in the vaccine; how would "they" know who had which chip? These mass vax sites arent logging bottles with names.
I guess "they're all in on it"

6. What's sad is that people who absolutely CANNOT...

... be vaccinated against Covid due to their health problems will miss out on these treatments too, if they develop a deadly cancer.

See what I did there?

But what about the effects of population explosion on the planet?

26. That was my immediate thought, as well.

If I was faced with a 'serious' cancer, I would be sorely tested to hang on to the altruistic notion that every person saved is just that much more burden on the planet, though. I'm afraid my survival instincts might overcome my altruism, and it might not even be that difficult.

13. Hopeful news! I wonder if this applies to invasive benign brain tumors

I don’t understand enough about the biology of cancerous cells, but brain tumors that are benign can be deadly as well, and I wonder if this could impact them? Though it sounds like the specific cancerous cells are what the antibodies form against, so maybe not.

My daughter (20) had brain surgery in November for a tumor in her cerebellum, very close to her brain stem. The surgeon and oncologist explained that brain tumors aren’t talked about as ‘benign’ and ‘malignant’ as much as ‘grade’ because a benign tumor that is aggressive and invasive can be deadly.

I have watched friends who’ve lost loved ones to malignant brain tumors — one an 8 year old son to DIPG and the other a sister to a glioblastoma. This feels like the leading edge of hope — please let it be so.

Meaning that if we can make it another 10 yrs, the advancements being worked on now will have an enormous impact on our longevity & health.

But I'm so glad to hear they are going forward with these vaccines!

24. I wonder if COVID vaccine development and distribution will speed new meds

or if entrenched financial interests will slow the process back to normal.

Because rendering neurosurgery obsolete will cause economic fallout every bit as much as retiring a nuclear plant.

27. Without raining on anyone's parade...

...it would be pertinent to look at the original paper.

IDH1 has long been a target of cancer drugs, with mixed results. The trial included 33 patients, some of whom did not generate an immune response to the epitope.

One dropped out owing to illness, two did not demonstrate an immune response as required for efficacy.

Progression free and survival rates were 63% and 84% respectively, two years out. This is different than a cure, however.

Journalists are notoriously bad at reporting science.
