4. Asteroids took out the dinosaurs - not the Earth

And, as stated, the lab would be underground.

8. It was more than the dinosaurs

Plant life also disappeared ... I guess my wonder was, since we are experiencing a global pandemic which could at some point in the future become worse with more lethal strains, securing any future progeny that would also be susceptible to the same lethal viruses seems futile ...
I guess plans like this, burying eggs and sperm to insure future life has been speculated over time, but during this specific time of a global pandemic with a potential of a worse outcome, it just seems a bit dismal ...

ymmv

10. "burying eggs and sperm"

Well, they're not planning to 'bury' it.

It would be a 'manned' underground lab. life station.

And there's something similar in existence now on Earth.

14. IEEE may be rocket scientists

But they're not Einsteins. 😉

Seriously. Electrical engineers are not scientists or biologists, obviously.

6. What is noticeably missing from that plan is how they would

get from eggs and sperm to a living creature. Different species have vastly different ways of completing the job once the egg and sperm have gotten together. This seems beyond impractical.

17. Cloning what?

Just think briefly about just how reproduction works, and how incredibly variable are the ways different creatures actually reproduce. Just combining egg and sperm isn't even a beginning. It's a total dead end. I'm in awe of the lack of thinking this through.

13. Kind of a dumb idea, IMO

Ecological systems, especially closed ones, are a lot more difficult than these guys seem to think. Case in point, fresh water fish farming takes things like mosquitoes, young fish live on the larvae.

Anything on the surface is going to be risky. With no stmosphere to protect it, everything aimed at the surface gets through. A tiny pebble traveling at tens of thousands of KPH would turn a pressurinzed oasis into an airless desert instantly.

I knew people who researched this type of closed system back in the 70s and it seemed every problem they solved led to ten new ones.
