Perseverance rover snaps gorgeous HD panorama of Mars landing site

By Mike Wall - Space.com Senior Writer 20 hours ago

It's the rover's 1st HD panorama and made of 142 images!

NASA's Perseverance rover has given us our best view yet of its Martian landing site.

The car-sized Perseverance captured a gorgeous 360-degree panorama of its surroundings on the floor of Jezero Crater, which harbored a lake and a river delta billions of years ago.

The photo, which NASA released today (Feb. 24), is composed of 142 individual images taken by Perseverance's Mastcam-Z camera system on Saturday (Feb. 21), three days after the rover touched down.

Mission team members had already stitched together a Jezero panorama using images taken on Friday (Feb. 20) by Perseverance's navigation cameras. But the high-definition Mastcam-Z has sharper eyes, so the newly unveiled photo is more striking and detailed.

Wonderful panorama at link. Remember to put the image on "full screen."

5. Looks liuke a lot of places here in the southwest

I remember the first pictures, years ago, of a reddish desert strewn with rocks under a dusty, pale sky. I kept looking for a prairie dog popping up.

13. Funny you should say that, Warpy about 10 years ago. I was Dx with stage 4B squamous cell carcinoma

& treated at CTCA in Goodyear AZ. I HATE the desert & REALY despise Arizona not because of it being dry but because of the blatant racism I saw, which is really saying something because my father's family is from Outer Bumfuckia SC, a town so small and backwards that the ONE time my mother took us to spend time there, she was actually told by the local owner of the general store that "Coloreds" weren't allowed to enter through the front door.

The first 6 weeks I had to be "in hospital" because of daily radiotherapy and then I had to fly in every 3 weeks for my chemo, (palliative but FECO is the truth!). I live in northern California but I'm a native Angelena & everytime I had to go I would SO depressed. I remember telling Bae the first time we landed in Phoenix during the day that the hills looked like Mars....It looked like damned Mars.

6. Fake News

"It's not real. It's CGI. Faked by Kubrick. Who faked his own death and is still alive, and at age 92 is still working for NASA."

7. Irrelevant post. Great science thread doesn't need putdowns of people who don't & won't post here.

Enjoy.

8. Here's an interactive 360 view of Perseverance's Mars landing site.

At first glance it looks like a regular YouTube video, but when you click play it works like a Google Street View image that you can pan around with your mouse. Be sure to click through to the full screen mode.

9. Oh, WOW! Thank you for posting this interactive video. It's wonderful, Towlie.

It would be important to spend a lot of time on this one. It's one to keep for future reference and sharing, too. ⭐️
