New cancer therapy with gold nanoparticles
Washington, Aug 28 ( Prensa Latina) Scientists have proposed a new cancer therapy that uses illuminated gold nanoparticles to heat and destroy tumors without the debilitating side effects of chemotherapy, invasive surgery and radiation.
The research, released on Wednesday by the journal PNAS, reports the results of 16 patients aged between 58 and 79 with low to intermediate risk localized prostate cancer, previously treated at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
Of them, 15 patients were given an intravenous infusion of nanoparticles on the first day and underwent image-guided tumor ablation on the second day.
All patients went home on the day of treatment and returned for follow-up testing at three months, six months and a year later.
Only two of the people treated showed detectable signs of cancer on follow-up biopsies and magnetic resonance imaging one year later.
The study, which is ongoing and has treated 44 patients at Mount Sinai and two other medical centers in Michigan and Texas, is the culmination of a 20-year search by Rice University engineer and nanoscientist Naomi Halas and Duke University bioengineer Jennifer West.
According to experts this new therapy is a milestone in cancer clinical testing of in the world.
