Beer before wine, or wine before beer; whatever the order, youll feel queer. That, at least, is the updated aphorism drinkers will have to embrace now scientists have proved that drink order has no effect on the magnitude of ones hangover.
Under carefully-controlled lab conditions, British and German researchers plied 90 volunteers with beer and wine to find out once and for all whether hangovers are worsened by the order in which drinks are necked.
Everyone knows the saying, beer before wine and youll feel fine; wine before beer and youll feel queer, said Kai Hensel, a senior clinical fellow at Cambridge University. We thought there must be something in it, how can we test it?
The volunteers, aged 19 to 40, were given a standardised meal tailored to their individual energy requirements and then split into three groups. The first drank about two and a half pints of lager followed by four large glasses of white wine. The second group had the same drinks but in reverse order. The third group had only beer or wine up to the same breath alcohol concentration. Everyone drank up to 0.11%, so they had the same alcohol level in their systems.

(51,585 posts)I used to be able to drink anyone under the table (even though I am small) and I drank shots of tequila and whiskey the same night and no hangovers, etc. Then one day BOOM! One shot of whiskey and followed by a massive hangover. A few years later the shot of whiskey had NO effect on me what so ever. No hangover, no nausea, no buzz, no warm feeling, no happy feet, nothing. It was like drinking water. It was a let down but I didn't give up and so I tried it again and again but still...nothing. No one ever told me to expect that...and I am only 56.

(16,377 posts)I've actually been trying to drink more lately to make myself engage more socially. Everything seems to give me a headache, although I enjoy a little buzz. In my early twenties I went out every week either on Friday or Saturday and drank and danced in discos. It was fun back then. I don't remember the hangovers probably because I paced myself pretty well and stopped at a certain point. I miss that.

(51,585 posts)I wish someone had warned me when I was younger. No, that probably would have made me drink more at the time (better live it up while I can) knowing that it wouldn't have the same effect when I got older.

(1,533 posts)After we drank all the beer, I had a glass or two from a previously opened bottle of wine. 24 hours of being sick almost hourly. In college of course, Didn't drink again for a year, and then I could only tolerate a beer if it was ice cold. I got better eventually.
I don't think the order matters much, unless being already drunk lets you drink something that might be off, that you normally would take a sip of and say "Nope."
